Congress

Depending on where you live, you may have one of the below congressional districts on your ballot.

  • Bob Dingethal is running for Congress because he supports a stronger middle class, equal pay for equal work, and investments in education, infrastructure, and good jobs here in the United States. Dingethal would bring more than 35 years of experience in the public, private and non-profit sector with him to Congress.

Dingethal faces a tough race against incumbent Jaime Herrera Beutler, an extremely conservative Republican. She has consistently sided with some of the most conservative members of her party on issues like health care, environmental protection, immigration reform, economic fairness. Far right Republican Michael Delavar is also challenging Herrera Beutler. Dingethal is the best choice in this race.

  • Jason Ritchie is a rising star who is running an energetic campaign to defeat incumbent Dave Reichert. Ritchie started a business remodeling homes for the disabled after his father had a stroke and suffered from limited mobility. With a strong commitment to progressive values on issues such as immigration reform, protecting safe and legal access to abortion, and fully funding education, Ritchie would be a welcome change to the district.

Conservative Republican Dave Reichert has yet to sponsor one piece of legislation that has been passed into law and is an ineffective representative for the district. Ritchie deserves your vote.

Booth Gardner, and TVW co-founder. Heck is being challenged by Republican Joyce McDonald, a Pierce County Councilwoman, former state legislator, and former Republican Party official. Other candidates include Independent Jennifer Gigi Ferguson, who is conservative on social issues, including women’s health protections, and is not running a competitive campaign, as well as Human Rights Party member Sam Wright. Heck’s track record, experience, and values make him the best choice in this race.

  • Derek Young is a four-term Gig Harbor City Council member and small business owner. He wants to improve the county’s mental health and public safety services and has been an advocate for women’s health and reproductive rights. He emphasizes conservation efforts for the region, having tripled the size of the Gig Harbor's parks and open spaces while on the City Council. As a Board Member for Pierce Transit, Young fought to minimize cuts to public transportation options for Pierce County citizens.

Young is challenging conservative Stanley Flemming, who was first elected in 2010. Flemming recently moved to Gig Harbor to run for re-election after redistricting placed his house in University Place into a different district. In 2012, Flemming ran against Denny Heck for the U.S. House of Representatives and lost badly after campaigning on a platform of repealing the Affordable Care Act. Flemming’s congressional campaign also struggled with allegations of financial improprieties after taking out a large, legally questionable loan from a company in California. Derek Young is the clear choice in this race.

Depending on where you live, you may have the following county races on your ballot.

  • Incumbent Karen Valenzuela is a progressive Democrat. She has been endorsed by the National Women's Political Caucus, among others. Valenzuela has clear goals in mind for increasing sustainability in Thurston. Unfortunately, she has moved to privatize the custodial staff of the court house, a blow to local labor unions. Valenzuela's opponent, Independent Bud Blake, condemns the contracting of the custodial positions on his website and calls for the workers to be rehired. A great deal of Blake's focus is on the ARC jail, which is being underused and costing millions in tax money to keep open. However, Blake also has the backing of many local Republicans. We think Valenzuela is the better choice in this race.
