Senator Deeds is a strong supporter of better funding for public schools. He currently sits on the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee, where he worked to address the funding gaps in the Commonwealth’s school system. He fought for higher teacher salaries, increased funding for career and technical institutions, and created the SOL Reform Committee. As a mental health reform advocate, he expanded mental health education programs in elementary and secondary schools. He hopes to raise teacher pay to above the national average and lower the cost of higher education.

Senator Deeds is an unwavering advocate for abortion access, and he understands that abortion is on the ballot in Virginia. He has been endorsed by top abortion advocacy organizations and believes in enshrining access to abortion into the Commonwealth’s constitution, voting for the Senate Joint Resolution during the 2023 General Assembly. In 2020, he voted to pass a bill that expanded who was able to perform some abortions.

Senator Deeds is a fierce advocate for mental health reform, having lost his own son to mental illness. He worked to establish the Behavioral Health Commission and implement the use of mobile crisis services. For his work on mental health reform, Senator Deeds has gained recognition across the Commonwealth and the country. If re-elected, he will continue efforts to reform Virginia’s mental health system. Two areas of focus are growing the workforce and investing in long-term housing. Additionally, Senator Deeds supports Medicaid expansion.

During the 2023 General Assembly, Senator Deeds patroned common sense gun violence prevention bills. He looks to his own experience of losing his son to gun violence as motivation He supports an assault weapons ban and worked with the University of Virginia and community leaders to introduce a bill that would ban firearms on college campuses. Senator Deeds has also worked on legislation for universal background checks, red-flag laws, safety storage laws, and firearm purchase limitations.

Senator Deeds is facing Republican Philip Hamilton. Hamilton ran in the 2021 District 57 House of Delegates race, losing to Delegate Sally Hudson. He perpetuates false narratives about indoctrination in schools. He supports the forced outing of trans students and believes conservatives and Christians should stand “against wokeness.” The anti-LGBTQ forced outing bill Hamilton is campaigning behind failed to pass the Virginia State Senate during the 2023 General Assembly.

  • Virginia’s new 27th State Senate district encompasses parts of Stafford County, parts of Spotsylvania County, and Fredericksburg City. With over 155,000 registered voters, this is a competitive district that does not lean one way or another.

This election will be held on November 7, 2023. Democratic candidate Joel Griffin, Republican candidate Delegate Tara Durant, and Independent Monica Gary are facing each other in the general election for Virginia’s new 27th State Senate district. Delegate Durant has served in the House of Delegates since 2022. Gary previously held the Stafford County Supervisor Aquia district seat.
Democratic candidate Joel Griffin is a Marine Corps veteran, entrepreneur, restaurateur, and philanthropist. He grew up in Marshville, North Carolina, a rural town outside of Charlotte. He has 25 years of private industry consulting experience and 20 years of experience in government contracting. After graduating high school, Griffin joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the Marine Corps Honor Guard and volunteered for the infantry. He and his wife of 25 years raised two daughters.

Griffin is a strong advocate for public schools and the opportunities education provides. He believes that public schools are integral to ending poverty, increasing opportunity, reducing crime, and strengthening communities. Griffin supports increasing student resources and paying teachers a fair wage. He stands against those who create barriers to accessing important resources for children, such as those who aim to control access to libraries. He believes that reinvesting in public schools is necessary to make sure that everyone, regardless of income, is able to get a good education.

Joel Griffin is a strong supporter of abortion access in the Commonwealth. He understands that if Republicans gain control, it is possible a full ban will go into effect. Griffin has expressed his hopes for enshrining the right to abortion access into the Virginia State Constitution. Griffin has listed this as a first priority and a possible bill he would introduce. He is endorsed by Roe Your Vote Virginia and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia.

Looking at his own experiences growing up in a household where childcare was unaffordable has shaped Griffin’s views on economic justice. If elected, Griffin will prioritize funding for childcare assistance programs. He believes in policies that help providers operate sustainably while keeping high standards of care. Griffin supports investments in early childhood education and the long-term benefits they provide to children and families. As an employer himself, he promotes paid family and medical leave.

Joel Griffin is facing Republican Delegate Tara Durant and Monica Gary in the District 27 race. Delegate Tara Durant has served in the House of Delegates since 2022. She is a former teacher. She has sponsored bills that would create barriers to voting and voted for bills that would disrupt access to abortion care. She also sponsored a bill that would allow crisis pregnancy centers to be listed as valid resources.

Monica Gary previously held the Stafford County Supervisor Aquia district seat. Gary grew up in a low-income family, facing financial difficulties, food insecurity, and housing insecurity. She became involved in her community following the death of George Floyd, attending county board meetings and organizing with activist and faith groups. She is currently working to complete her Masters of Divinity. She has made previous statements using anti-abortion rhetoric.

Due to his commitment to public schools, supporting abortion access, and prioritizing economic justice, Joel Griffin is the progressive choice in this race.

  • Former Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy represented the 87th District from 2017 to December 2020, when she resigned to make an unsuccessful run for Governor. She is now seeking the State Senate in District 33 in 2023. During her stint as Delegate, she fought to pass Medicaid expansion to 400,000 Virignians. She also voted for a pay raise for Virginia teachers. She co-patroned a bill to increase the grand larceny threshold from $200 to $500. She supports legislation to increase abortion access, affordable public transportation, and criminal justice reform.

As Delegate, Carroll Foy was a strong advocate for building good jobs and ensuring sustainable development. In 2018, she earned the Champion of Enterprise Award from the Virginia Chamber of Commerce for her efforts. Carroll Foy passed bipartisan legislation to give veterans greater access to the capital they need to start and grow a business. She co-sponsored a bill that rewarded companies for creating jobs in underserved communities. Additionally, she passed legislation to give small minority-owned businesses more opportunities to secure contracts with utilities. She passed legislation to provide greater access to coding courses in high school, preparing students for the 21st-century economy. Finally, she passed a bill allowing local school divisions to enter into College and Career Access Pathways Partnerships with community colleges.

Fmr. Del. Carroll Foy has always fought for unions and working families. As a Delegate, she passed groundbreaking legislation that instituted a prevailing wage on all state-funded construction projects, sponsored legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, and passed a bill that cracks down on companies that don't pay their workers. She also sponsored legislation to ensure that workers' compensation covered firefighters who contracted cancer on the job. She co-sponsored legislation repealing the "Comstock rule" that banned the use of Project Labor Agreements, which would help thousands of construction workers get quality health coverage. Their efforts led to the biggest expansion of labor rights in decades.

Fmr. Del. Carroll Foy has spent her career fighting for equal rights. She led the fight to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment and has made concrete changes to advance equality for all Virginians. As Delegate, she worked to protect reproductive freedom, helped to lead the Reproductive Health Protection Act, and pushed legislation to establish equality in school dress codes. She also advocated for paid family and medical leave and passed the Pregnant Worker Fairness Act.

Throughout her career, Fmr. Del. Carroll Foy has witnessed the systemic flaws that define the criminal justice system, which disproportionately impact our most vulnerable communities. She has advocated for those who could not advocate for themselves and on behalf of those for whom the justice system is broken. As a Delegate, she sponsored legislation to address cash bail reform, the ban on parole, and the issue of "driving poor," all of which contribute to mass incarceration and cyclical patterns of joblessness and poverty within minority communities. She also sponsored a bill prohibiting the use of neck restraints, such as chokeholds, by law enforcement and passed legislation to repeal the Habitual Drunkard law, which unfairly punishes the homeless and those struggling with substance abuse.

Fmr. Del. Carroll Foy is facing Republican Mike Van Meter in the general election. Van Meter will do nothing to hold police accountable for abuse against the communities they’re supposed to protect. He follows in the footsteps of the worst Republican attacks on public education. He will do nothing to prevent gun violence plaguing our communities.

Given her record of supporting sustainable development, lifting up unions, pursuing equality, and fighting for a fair criminal justice system, Fmr. Del. Carroll Foy is the clear progressive choice in this race.

House of Delegates

Depending on where you live, you may have one of the below House of Delegate races on your ballot.

This election will be held on November 7, 2023. Democratic candidate in the general election for Virginia’s new 19th District for House of Delegates.
Rozia Henson, a successful federal contractor and program manager, is running for the Virginia House of Delegates District 19 to be a voice for the underrepresented and marginalized. Raised to serve and with a passion for democracy, Henson has been involved in various leadership roles within the Prince William County Democratic Party. He aims to protect democracy and represent the new 19th House of Delegates District, advocating for constituents' voices and addressing disparities faced by people of color.

Henson, a passionate advocate for safer communities, will address gun safety concerns when elected. Inspired by the tragic case of Brendon Mackey, Henson worked with former State Senator Henry Marsh to champion Brendon's Law, elevating celebratory gunfire resulting in injury to a felony offense. With a track record of bipartisanship and community engagement, Henson aims to ban ghost guns, remove firearms from dangerous individuals, and invest in violence intervention programs. His commitment has earned him the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate Distinction.

Henson, a strong advocate for reproductive rights, is committed to fighting for abortion access and bodily autonomy. As Senior Vice Chair for the Prince William County Democrats, Henson engaged the community on reproductive healthcare. He actively worked with the Women's Caucus to advocate for a special session to codify autonomy and choice in Virginia. As Delegate, Henson will continue to champion abortion access, address the maternal mortality rate, and expand medical access to underserved communities, ensuring equal opportunities for quality healthcare.

As the son and grandson of union members, Henson is deeply committed to supporting working families and unions. He fought for collective bargaining for firefighters, police, government employees, and schoolteachers when the legislation passed in the Virginia General Assembly. As Delegate, he will work to strengthen laws against wage theft, repeal the "right-to-work" law, and introduce legislation for Paid Family and Medical Leave. He will also advocate for small businesses by creating a "set-aside" and prioritizing Virginia-run businesses for services provided to the Commonwealth Government.

As a committed advocate for climate action and environmental justice, Henson will prioritize addressing the ongoing climate crisis and its impact on marginalized communities. He has actively worked to remove coal ash ponds, keep Virginia in RGGI, and halt offshore pipelines. As Delegate, Henson will fight for a transition to clean energy, push for a moratorium on fossil-fuel projects, and strive to achieve 100% clean renewable energy by 2035. He will also work to strengthen energy efficiency goals in the state to create a sustainable future for all.

Henson is running unopposed and is a progressive choice in this race.
  • Incumbent Democratic Delegate Candi King obtained her bachelor’s degree in political science from Norfolk State University, where she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Outside of the General Assembly, she works in the non-profit sector, making the educational system more accessible and equitable to special needs children. King and her husband, Josh King, reside in Dumfries with their three children, including a non-verbal autistic teenage daughter.

Delegate King was elected in January 2021 after a special election to replace former Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy. During her first legislative session, Delegate King supported legislation that would allow essential workers to be eligible for worker’s compensation if diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus. This same legislation would also require hazard pay and personal protective equipment to essential workers during the pandemic. She supported legislation to prevent maternal mortality by establishing a task force to collect data on maternal health outcomes.

Delegate King co-patroned the Get Skilled, Get a Job, Give Back, “G3,” Program bill that grants free tuition at community colleges for low- and middle-income Virginians who study in certain fields. She voted for a 5% pay raise for Virginia teachers, hoping to retain quality educators and prevent high turnover and approved of funding to help schools reopen safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also sponsored legislation to require the state department of education to update its special education and related services to better accommodate students with disabilities.

Working to make the promise of democracy real for us all, she co-patroned The Voting Rights Act of Virginia. This bill expands on the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, and prohibits discrimination at the polls. King voted for measures that make voting easier like removing some requirements on absentee and curbside voting and the requirement of a witness signature on absentee ballots in the time of an emergency. She also supported the establishment of drop box locations for voters to return their absentee ballots .

Delegate King focuses on combating the problem by introducing a bill that would give more rights to victims of sex trafficking and requires the state to identify and better respond to crimes involving sex trafficking. In addition to this, she supported legislation that would allow victims of sex trafficking to have their records expunged as they work to rebuild their lives.

Del. King’s opponent is Republican candidate James Tully who earned his bachelors degree at George Mason University. Tully is also a Marine Corp veteran and former Deputy Sheriff. Tully supports more funding for law enforcement despite their implicit excessive force, racial discrimination, and violence towards Black people and communities of color. Tully has no plan for to combat the growing threats to reproductive justice nor does he have plans to initiate environmental justice policies to ensure a safer Commonwealth.

Due to her support of public education, voting rights, and workers’ rights, Del. Candi King is the most progressive choice for the House of Delegates 2nd District.

Incumbent Democratic Delegate Candi King obtained her bachelor’s degree in political science from Norfolk State University, where she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

  • Virginia’s new 24th District in the House of Delegates encompasses parts of Prince William County. With close to 58,000 registered voters, this district leans strongly Democratic.
This election will be held on November 7, 2023. Incumbent Democratic Delegate Luke Torian is running unopposed in the general election for Virginia’s new 24th House of Delegates district. Delegate Torian was first elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2009
Incumbent Delegate Luke Torian has represented the 52nd District in the Virginia House of Delegates since 2010 and currently serves as chair of the House Appropriations Committee. Delegate Torian earned his undergraduate degree from Winston-Salem State University and received graduate degrees from the School of Theology at Virginia Union University and Howard University School of Divinity. Since 1995, he has served as Pastor of First Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dumfries. He lives in Woodbridge with his wife and daughter.

Del. Torian has done critical work to reform criminal justice in Virginia. He wrote and helped pass the 2020 Community Policing Act, which enforces the collection and release of police data. The increased transparency has helped reveal and address racial biases in the police force. He also voted to abolish the death penalty. He voted in favor of a bill to introduce automatic expungement of certain criminal records in the Commonwealth. This policy will help people with misdemeanor convictions on their record have access to education, housing, and jobs.

In 2021, Del. Torian carried legislation creating the VirginiaSaves retirement program, which establishes a state-facilitated retirement plan for those who do not receive one through their employers. This program helps decrease the racial and economic disparities in building long-term wealth and saving for the future. Torian also supported workers’ rights by voting to allow collective bargaining for public workers He also voted to raise the minimum wage and increase the salaries of teachers, social workers, and other public employees.

Del. Torian is also working to address the affordable housing crisis in the district. In 2021, he sponsored legislation to protect the rights of people living in manufactured home parks and slow down the foreclosure process, ensuring fewer Virginians lose their homes. He also voted to strengthen the rights of tenants to prevent evictions and to protect their health during emergencies like the pandemic.

Del. Torian has also worked to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. In 2018, he voted to expand Medicaid, which resulted in 500,000 Virginians having access to health coverage. He successfully passed a bill ending "surprise billing" by healthcare providers to increase transparency in the medical billing process and ensure Virginians are protected from predatory practices by insurance companies. Additionally, he voted in favor of ensuring abortions are covered by health insurance companies in the state exchange.

Delegate Torian is not facing an opponent this year and because of his support of criminal justice reform, working families, affordable housing and health care, Delegate Torian is the most progressive choice for Virginia’s 24th District.
  • A Prince William County native, Incumbent Democratic Delegate Briana Sewell was raised by parents who were each United States Air Force members for over 20 years. She attended Prince William County Public Schools, and then received her bachelor’s degree in public policy from the College of William and Mary and a Master of Public Administration from American University. She has since worked providing constituent services for Congressman Gerry Connolly. She also helped found the Virginia Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy, which advocates for paid family and medical leave for working families. During her time as Delegate she has patroned bills to support the improvement of education for students as well as protections for teacher licensure. She has also made efforts to reduce gun violence in the Commonwealth by co-patroning bills to conduct a study on the effect of gun violence in the community.

Due to her experience advocating for paid family and medical leave, Delegate Sewell supports policies that uplift Virginia’s families and economy. She worked to ensure federal employees receive 12 weeks of paid medical and family leave and other workers have access to sufficient leave and benefits. She also knows a well-funded education system is crucial to a strong economy. She will work to ensure school resources are equally distributed and every student has access to well-funded, quality education. She supports policies to lower the cost of college and fund other job training and vocational programs.

Delegate Sewell particularly understands how women play a critical role in the economy. A strong advocate for fair pay and anti-discrimination laws in the workplace, she will work to lower the cost of childcare to ensure parents can afford to stay in the workforce. She will also advocate for childcare providers, who are often women and women of color. She knows that economic and reproductive rights are inherently tied together and will fight for people to have access to abortion, so people can choose when and whether to become parents.

Delegate Sewell knows that paid family and medical leave must also go hand-in-hand with affordable and accessible healthcare coverage and chief co-patroned HB2035, a bill to establish the paid medical leave program. She supports efforts to regulate prescription drug companies and reduce prescription costs. The pandemic has further revealed racial and socioeconomic biases in healthcare coverage, and Del. Sewell will work to ensure there are no barriers to necessary healthcare.

Delegate Sewell has advocated for the environment her entire career. While working in Congressman Connolly’s office, she tried to reduce pollutants in the district by shutting down the coal ash pond nearby. She chief patroned HJ545, a bill requiring the Dept. of Energy to list the barriers that prevent local governments from directly buying clean energy. She believes that investing in green infrastructure will create high-paying jobs in the Commonwealth and will ensure that every citizen has access to clean water and air. She will work to fund green public transit options to limit emissions and traffic congestion.

Sewell is running against Republican John S Gray. Information on Gray’s politics was unavailable, but his string of extremely problematic tweets gives some clue as to where his politics lie. Among the tweets he paid to be deleted are racist statements made in regards to Black people and the BLM protests, as well as hateful speech towards other religious practices. He has expressed no regret for his statements.

Due to her advocacy for Virginia working families, women’s rights, affordable healthcare, and the environment, Delegate Briana Sewell is the most progressive choice for Virginia’s 51st District.

  • Amy Laufer worked her way through school at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and eventually graduated with a geology degree. She went on to work as a water analyst, as well as a volunteer in the Peace Corps. After leaving the Peace Corps, she attended Columbia University and graduated with a Master’s degree in Secondary Science Education. Eventually, she moved to Virginia, where she taught math and science at Louisa County Middle School and Tandem Friends School. There, she was appointed to the Commission of Children and Families. She was also elected to the Charlottesville City School Board in 2011 and she went on to be reelected. She was the board’s vice chair and chair from 2012–2016. In 2015, she executed the Equality Virginia non-discrimination policy as one of the only two counties in Virginia to approve it.

Laufer wants to codify Roe v. Wade to ensure that anyone who needs abortion care has access to it. She had a high risk pregnancy herself, so she understands the reality of having to make difficult choices during pregnancy. She believes that doctors should have the ability to help patients make those decisions without government interference.

Laufer promises to uplift needs of the community, which include affordable healthcare. She believes that Covid-19 exposed the weaknesses of the American healthcare system, which has left many without access to basic care. Laufer not only wants better care for those who need it, but she also wants to promote wellness care that focuses on prevention such as nutrition and mental health services.

Laufer believes the science that has strongly predicted the effects of climate change. She says that everyone can already feel the effects of climate change with floods, heat damage, unpredictable weather, and more. Laufer wants to take steps to combat climate change that include reducing carbon emissions, preserving land, and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

Joining the Peace Corps ignited Laufer’s passion for teaching children, and she believes that all children are worth investing in. She believes that education should be treated as an investment and not an expense. She says that children need adequate resources from early childhood into adulthood, because when children are set up for success, it makes the entire community successful. This also includes increased pay for teachers, counselors, and staff. Laufer wants to focus on workforce development from K-12 schools to community colleges.

Laufer says that “people are dying due to an overzealous deregulation of firearms.” She believes that guns that are not safely stored are hazardous to children and people suffering from mental distress. Laufer wants extreme risk protection orders laws to be enforced, and she wants gun owners to be registered with permits.

Laufer is running against Republican candidate Steve Harvey. Steve Harvey graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in Business, and he was an ROTC cadet during his time there. He went on to serve in the military as a Blackhawk pilot for the Army before receiving medical discharge due to a spinal injury. Harvey would defund public schools in favor of unregulated and unaccredited charter schools. He would vote against gun violence prevention legislation. He also would make it harder to vote by ending same-day voter registration and requiring difficult to obtain photo identification for voting. Harvey is anti-abortion and would vote to make it harder to access.

Amy Laufer is the progressive choice within this race, as she supports abortion access, along with legislation that promotes safety and access for members of the community.

  • Larry Jackson is a retired Department of Defense research engineer and now works as a contractor doing research. He has a bachelor’s degree in math and a master's degree in mechanical engineering. He was an adjunct Math Professor at Northern Virginia Community College for over five years. He was elected as one of the Co-Chairs of the Fauquier County Democratic Committee from 2018-2022. He is active in the local Black Lives Matter Vigil for Action and has attended since May 2020. He believes in climate change and relies on science and research to come to conclusions. He is a husband, father, grandfather, and son and has lived in Virginia for over 40 years. He has lived in Fauquier County since 2014.

Jackson does not have a comprehensive priorities or issues list on his website, but he does offer hints to his progressive leaning: he calls himself “pro environmental protection, pro healthcare access for all, pro public education, and pro common sense gun laws.” He is also endorsed by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia.

Jackson announced his candidacy via a press release in which he outlined some of his positions. He says that “defending a woman’s right to choose and control her health care needs is my highest priority. We are witnessing states throughout the country and, particularly the south, restrict or deny the right for women to make the most personal and impactful decisions about their healthcare and lives. On behalf of my wife, daughter and numerous friends of mine I will do my best to ensure that Virginia remains a state where a woman has reproductive rights.”

Some of his other priorities include health care reform, environmental protection, public education and "common-sense gun laws." Jackson grew up on military bases, where he never saw neighbors carrying guns. He talks about strict rules that were in place about gun ownership and where a person can carry a gun. He models his position after this experience, arguing that I weapons of war should not be available to anyone who wants one, and there needs to be restrictions on their use.

Additionally, Jackson said he is committed to social justice reform “to ensure that all Virginia residents are treated fairly regardless of their race, gender, religion or ethnic background.” This extends to public school classrooms and civil society, where “we are increasingly witnessing efforts to control what people can read and how they can worship or where and how they can vote. This must stop, and I pledge to fight for our continued liberty as enshrined in our U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.”

Jackson is challenging incumbent Republican Delegate Michael Webert. Webert has supported multiple anti-trans bills. He has supported initiatives to attack election access and integrity. He takes a hardline anti-abortion stance who supports Newsom’s initiative to ban abortion.

Given his support for reproductive freedoms, healthcare access, and civil liberties, Jackson is the progressive choice in this race.

  • Sara Ratcliffe is from the Midwest, and she was primarily raised by a single mother who faced mental health challenges. This upbringing exposed her at a young age to the consequences of government shortcomings in addressing citizens' needs. Growing up in a community where many families struggled to make ends meet, Sara witnessed parents who had to make the tough choice of either paying for medical bills or putting food on the table. These experiences ingrained in her a lifelong dedication to advocating for those whose voices often go unheard in the government.

Ratcliffe believes that healthcare is an inherent right, and that no one should ever face the dilemma of choosing between their family's well-being and financial stability. She believes that the foundation of healthcare should prioritize patient needs, enabling healthcare professionals to provide care without the interference of political rhetoric, which includes abortion access. She also believes that everyone should have access to affordable and top-notch healthcare services, including veterans. Ratcliffe wants everyone to have access to quality healthcare, mental health services, and counseling for substance abuse as well.

Ratcliffe says that Virginia’s commitment to environmental preservation extends to reinforcing regulations aimed at curbing pollution and safeguarding precious natural resources like air, water, and land. Embracing sustainable practices such as recycling, composting, and waste reduction will be integral to our efforts. Additionally, she believes that Virginia should champion the adoption of innovative technologies and approaches in sustainable farming to promote a greener and more responsible agricultural sector. Ratcliffe supports policies that are aimed at educating and involving the public in understanding the significance of environmental protection and climate action. She believes that community collaboration is essential as Virginia strives to create a sustainable future for the planet and the generations to come.

Delegate Nick Freitas is a Republican who has served the previous District 30 since 2016. Freitas is anti-abortion, and he does not support gun violence prevention legislation. His voting records also show that he is anti-LGBTQ, having voted in support of a forced outing bill.

Sara Ratcliffe is the progressive choice, as she supports accessible healthcare, reproductive rights, and environmental protection.

  • Dr. Leonard Lacey is a staunch supporter of education and boasts an extensive list of degrees from esteemed educational institutions across Virginia. He has genuine concerns about the shortage of teachers and the inadequate funding for our schools. He will increase funding for public schools and raise teacher pay. By focusing on improving our public schools for students and teachers, he believes society as a whole will benefit.

Drawing from his valuable experiences as a pastor, Leonard firmly believes that addressing these divisions necessitates the establishment of strong relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. He recognizes that trust can be rebuilt through improved communication, understanding, and empathy. In pursuit of this goal, Leonard emphasizes the importance of providing police officers with access to relevant training that enables them to navigate diverse cultural landscapes effectively. By promoting cultural awareness, he aims to foster an environment where law enforcement can better serve and protect all citizens equitably.

  • Virginia’s new 65th House of Delegates district encompasses parts of Stafford County, Fredericksburg City, and parts of Spotsylvania County. With over 62,000 registered voters, this is a competitive district.

This election will be held on November 7, 2023. Democratic candidate Joshua Cole and Republican candidate Lee Peters are facing each other in the general election for Virginia’s new 65th House of Delegates district. Cole won the 2019 28th District House of Delegates general election.
Former Delegate Joshua Cole was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2019-2021, losing his district by less than a 1,000 votes in a difficult off-year election. He is a pastor, former President of the Stafford County NAACP, and works with numerous other local and community initiatives. In his first term, he voted to cap out-of-pocket health care costs on prescription drugs for people with pre-existing conditions, raise the minimum wage, expand voting rights and make community college tuition free. He also took the lead on historic legislation, including renaming Jefferson Davis Highway to Emancipation Highway and bringing automatic voter registration to Virginia. He is running for HD-65 to return to the General Assembly and continue his work on behalf of Fredericksburg area families.

During his previous term, Former Delegate Cole fought to make his district a more just, affordable, and environmentally friendly place to live. He voted to pass the Equal Rights Amendment and protect a person’s right to decide when and whether to become a parent, including expanding healthcare coverage to include abortions. He pushed to prohibit landlords from running negative credit checks during the pandemic.

Fmr. Del. Cole has fought for all working people in Virginia, no matter their income. He voted to raise the minimum wage and make community college tuition-free. He also advocated for increasing the number of affordable housing units in the district while working to address the rising cost of living and rent. He plans to establish rent controls, create a Virginia Housing Tax Credit, increase funding for the Virginia Housing Trust Fund, and promote inclusionary zoning to ensure there are sufficient housing units in the district.

Fmr. Del. Cole supported the expansion of Medicaid and hopes to repeal Medicaid work requirements. He also supports Medicare For All. He supports keeping the price of prescriptions down and voted to cap insulin co-payments. Fmr. Del. Cole advocated for banning the practice of “balanced billing,” also known as surprise billing, where patients are charged with surprise fees. He also plans to work on improving the district’s medical and mental health support for veterans.

Fmr. Del. Cole has also advocated for critical environmental policies by fighting to preserve the district’s natural resources and environment. He co-sponsored the Virginia Green New Deal Act, which would establish a moratorium on fossil fuel projects and incentivize investment in clean energy. He recognizes that renewable energy is both environmentally and economically beneficial by creating new jobs. He also supported legislation that would set strict regulations on polluters and raise the standards for clean air and water.

Fmr. Del. Cole is facing Lee Peters III in the general election, a lifelong cop endorsed by Governor Youngkin, Attorney General Miyares, and other heinous right-wingers. Predictably, “law and order” is a top priority–he supports Youngkin’s initiatives to ensure police remain forever unaccountable. He wants to further undermine public schools and the safety of children in them. He sees necessary safety regulations as red tape and pledges to eliminate oversight.

Due to his support of affordable healthcare, the environment, affordable housing, and working families, Fmr. Del. Joshua Cole is the most progressive choice for Virginia’s 65th District.
  • Virginia’s new 66th House of Delegates district encompasses parts of Spotsylvania County and parts of Caroline County. With almost 64,000 registered voters, this district leans Republican.
This election will be held on November 7, 2023. Incumbent Republican Delegate Bobby Orrock is facing a challenge from Democratic candidate Mark Lux in the general election for Virginia’s new 66th House of Delegates district. Delegate Orrock has served in the House of Delegates since 1990.
Democrat Mark Lux is a Special Education teacher in Prince William County for children with Autism. After graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant, Lux attended Columbia University and earned a Master's in International Affairs. He then served with the Army's 82nd Airborne Division and later became the Company Commander for a Military Police Reserve unit on Long Island. After leaving the Army, Lux worked in several managerial positions before earning a Master's in Special Education from Ohio University.

Lux will be a vote for healthcare across the board. He pledges to support abortion access without government interference and supports policies that ensure people have control over their own healthcare decisions. Additionally, Lux supports increased funding for mental health services, which he believes will help support schools and ensure that those who need help will get it.

Lux promises to push for transparency and a culture of respect. He says that, as a non-politician, a Veteran, and a Special Education Teacher, he is committed to putting people over politics and to working towards common-sense solutions that benefit everyone. He is committed to promoting a culture where individuals can live and learn without fear of violence or discrimination. He strongly denounces political extremism and election deniers and is committed to upholding the integrity of our democratic process.

As a special education teacher, Lux understands the importance of proper funding for public education. He argues that we need to commit to increased funding and support for public education and teacher training and recognizes the critical role that education plays in shaping the future of our society. He believes that we must invest in our schools and teachers to ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

As a veteran, Lux is intimately familiar with the challenges facing both active and retired military. He wants to ensure they get the support and resources they need and denounces dictatorial aggression at home and abroad.

Incumbent Republican Delegate Bobby Orrock is a far-right conservative elected to the House of Delegates in 1990. Orrock does not support access to abortion and voted against the Equal Rights Amendment. He was a staunch opponent of Medicaid expansion in Virginia. Additionally, he voted against raising the minimum wage, the Voting Rights Act of Virginia, and ending the death penalty.

Given his positions on healthcare, public education funding, and government transparency, Lux is the progressive choice in this race.
  • John Quincy Smith currently lives in King George County and was raised in a working-class family in Ohio. Following military service that included a deployment to Southeast Asia during the Vietnam conflict, the GI Bill helped him to earn a Ph.D. in history from Ohio State. He continued to serve as a Department of Defense civilian with the U.S. Air Force as a historian with assignments in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. and deployments to Southwest Asia. After retiring from the role of Air Force Senior Historian, he and his wife, Grace, moved to King George County, where Grace works as a special education teacher at King George Elementary School.

Smith wants to build a robust regional economy for everyone, with controlled development to protect the environmental integrity of the Northern Neck region. This stance earned him an endorsement from the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC)..

He also supports commonsense gun legislation. His policy positions earned him the 2023 Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction. He wants to defend voting rights, and supports increased funding to build quality public education. His desire to protect reproductive rights and access to abortion earned him an endorsement from Roe Your Vote Virginia and from the Committee to Protect Healthcare.

Smith’s opponent in this race is Republican Hillary Pugh Kent, a conservative businesswoman. She’d rather blindly increase funding for law enforcement than do anything to hold them accountable. She’s a COVID-19 conspiracy theorist who believes the pandemic was overblown because we handed the government the reins. Independent Richard Kenski is also in this race, but at the time of research we could find no information on him.

Because of his support for building strong healthcare that supports abortion access, his push to protect the environment, and his commonsense gun control positions, John Quincy Smith is the progressive choice in this race.
