Scott Flax is running to represent the 82nd District in the House of Delegates. Flax was born in Hampton Roads but grew up in Virginia Beach. He earned his law degree from the Washington College of Law. He is a partner at a law firm and serves as vice president of Jewish Family Services and president of the Thalia Civic League. He and his wife are raising their three children in the Thalia neighborhood of Virginia Beach.
Flax’s mom was an educator who taught at the school he attended. His wife currently teaches at Tidewater Community College. He supports public funding for all school levels, including pre-K to state colleges and universities. Flax will work to ensure that resources are appropriately allocated for optimal student success. He wants to increase teacher pay so that the Commonwealth attracts the best talent and prevents turnover. He also supports students receiving proper mental healthcare services as they transition back to school during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a resident of a coastal community facing rising sea levels, Flax understands the urgency of the climate crisis. If elected, he will work to address flooding and other consequences of climate change by securing funding to help improve the district's infrastructure against rising sea levels. He also sees the economic opportunity in the transition to clean energy and wants to
invest in workforce training programs for green jobs and make the region an offshore wind energy hub.
Another focus of Flax’s campaign is ensuring that military families and veterans receive the care and support they need. He plans to introduce legislation to make it easier for military spouses to transfer professional licenses from other states to Virginia so they can bring their skills to Virginia. Flax wants to protect military jobs in the Hampton Roads area by investing in the clean energy sector to support veterans after their military careers.
Flax believes in making access to quality, affordable healthcare a reality for all families in his district. He will fight to protect access to reproductive healthcare as well. Flax wants to hold police officers accountable who abuse their power. He supports limiting or ending qualified immunity and establishing citizen review boards with subpoena power. He wants to make the promise of democracy real for us all by expanding access to the ballot. He also wants to make Virginia a welcoming and inclusive place for LGBTQ community members.
Flax is running against Republican candidate Anne Ferrell Tata, a medical sales representative, author, and wife of a Navy veteran. Tata opposes abortion access and keeping communities safe with common-sense measures aimed at preventing gun violence. She is also opposed to efforts from the federal and state governments to help people out during the pandemic.
Due to his support of public education, the environment, military families, access to affordable healthcare, and criminal justice reform, Flax is the most progressive choice in this race.
