California’s 5th Congressional District includes parts of Stanislaus, El Dorado, Fresno, Tuolumne, Calaveras, Amador, Madera, and Mariposa Counties. Republicans typically hold this district. Of the registered voters in this district, 42% are Republican and 31% are Democrat, and the district’s demographic breakdown is 18% Latino, 6% Asian, and 2% Black. After the 2021 redistricting process, CD-05 is 1% less Republican than it was during the 2020 general election cycle. The most recent election results show that CD-05 voted for Trump for president in 2020 by 10 points and Cox for governor in 2018 by 19 points.

There are six candidates running for this seat, including Republican incumbent Rep. Tom McClintock, Republican opponents Nathan F. Magsig, David Main, and Kelsten Charles Obert, as well as independent challenger Steve Wozniak and Democratic challenger Michael J. “Mike” Barkley. McClintock’s campaign has raised over $1 million and is funded by real estate, fossil fuel, and corporate PAC money.
