Congress

Depending on where you live, you may have one of the below congressional districts on your ballot.

  • Suzan DelBene won a tough race in 2012 to represent the 1st Congressional District, which reaches from Kirkland to the Canadian border. A former executive at Microsoft and other technology companies, she has used her technology background to become a leader of protecting privacy rights against government surveillance. She has also been a strong advocate for job development, economic fairness, women’s health, and immigration reform. DelBene’s top challenger is Pedro Celis, a Republican and retired Microsoft engineer who was a leader for the George W. Bush re-election effort in 2004. Celis recently earned national attention by making unfortunate comments comparing gay marriage to polygamy. Edwin Moats, Robert Sutherland, and several other extremely conservative candidates in this race are not running competitive campaigns. DelBene’s experience and strong track record in her first term make her the clear choice in this race.

  • Jason Ritchie is a rising star who is running an energetic campaign to defeat incumbent Dave Reichert. Ritchie started a business remodeling homes for the disabled after his father had a stroke and suffered from limited mobility. With a strong commitment to progressive values on issues such as immigration reform, protecting safe and legal access to abortion, and fully funding education, Ritchie would be a welcome change to the district.

Conservative Republican Dave Reichert has yet to sponsor one piece of legislation that has been passed into law and is an ineffective representative for the district. Ritchie deserves your vote.

  • Steve Hobbs is a veteran, father, and conservative- leaning Democrat who is a reliable vote on social issues. For example, he has sponsored the Reproductive Parity Act in the Senate for the last three years, advocating hard for Senate leadership to vote on the bill to protect access to safe and legal abortion. Hobbs has been less reliable when it comes to closing tax loopholes or raising revenue to fund education and essential services. Despite his bipartisan voting record, Hobbs was dismissed by the Republicans as the Chair of the Senate Housing and Insurance Committee during this year's legislative session. Hobbs' opponent, businessman Jim Kellett, is a cookie cutter Republican who will toe the party line. Hobbs deserves another four years.

  • Representative Hans Dunshee is a progressive champion who has earned the support of environmentalists, labor organizations, education groups, women's health, and equal rights advocates. He has been instrumental in passing significant climate, energy, and green jobs bills. • Mike Wilson is a government and politics teacher as well as a coach in Everett who is running for an open seat. As a public school teacher, Wilson has seen firsthand the impacts of crowded classrooms on his students. Wilson is a strong candidate who will fight to fully fund schools and reduce class sizes. His opponent, Mark Harmsworth, is a frequent Republican candidate who has previously lost to Hans Dunshee. Harmsworth is a former Mill Creek city council person who supports the Tim Eyman 2/3 supermajority requirement to close tax loopholes or raise revenue. Though he has campaigned on increasing education funding, he has not offered any revenue options of how to do it. Wilson is the best choice in this race.

  • Matt Isenhower is a former naval officer and Harvard MBA who most recently resigned from Amazon.com to run for state Senate. Isenhower’s top priority is to increase education funding to meet our constitutional responsibility to our schools and reduce class sizes. He is a strong supporter of women’s health protections and gun safety legislation. Isenhower is challenging Republican Sen. Andy Hill. As the Senate Republican budget writer, Hill failed to close a single one of the 650 tax loopholes on the books in 2014. Instead, he proposed opening 18 new loopholes and fell far short of meeting the state Supreme Court’s mandate to fund education. Hill even opposed closing the Big Oil tax loophole, which would have devoted tens of millions of dollars to our kids’ classrooms. Isenhower is the best choice in this race.

  • Representative Roger Goodman has been one of the most effective progressive leaders in Olympia. He has helped expand early childhood education, fund local high-tech education, and strengthen our economy with investments in family-wage jobs. Goodman brings considerable professional experience to his work, including his legal practice, serving in federal and state government positions, and working in the non-profit world. • John Lovick is the current Snohomish County Executive, running to retain his recent appointment to the position following the resignation of previous County Executive, Aaron Reardon. Lovick spent nine years in the state legislature representing the 44th District, during five of which he was Speaker Pro-Tem. He was elected as the Snohomish County Sheriff in 2007 and successfully merged the County Jail with the Sheriff’s Office. Two people are challenging Lovick. His Democratic challenger, James R. Deal, is not running a credible campaign. Republican Carolyn Eslick is the current Mayor of Sultan. She is critical of Seattle’s $15 minimum wage and intends to entice Seattle businesses into Snohomish to avoid paying higher wages. Whoever wins the Executive position in the General Election will be up for reelection again in 2015, when a candidate will be elected to a full four-year term. While Lovick angered many progressives with his vocal support of the new Boeing contract, he is still the best choice in this race.
