  • Rep. Rick Larsen is a moderate, pragmatic Democrat who has been a strong advocate for jobs, transportation, and infrastructure projects in the 2nd District since he was first elected to Congress in 2000. He has also led efforts to protect voting rights, fought to reform student loans, and has been a champion of Wall Street reform. Unfortunately, Larsen angered many progressives with his support of the new contract that eliminated hard-earned pension benefits for Boeing machinists. Before serving in Congress he served on the Snohomish County Council and worked on economic development for City of Everett.

Larsen is facing two opponents who have far less resources in the primary. BJ Guillot is running on an extremely conservative Tea Party platform. Independent Mike Lapointe is running against Larsen on a very progressive platform that includes raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour immediately. Larsen’s experience, broad support, and generally progressive track record make him a good choice in this race.

No Good Choices

There is no good choice in this race. Incumbent Norma Smith is a far-right conservative who voted against equal rights for all loving couples. Her opponent, Libertarian Michael Scott, seems more interested in party ideology than representing his district. Depending on the county district you live in, you may have the following races on your ballot.

  • "Karla Jacks is the best choice in this race. She’s endorsed by the Island County Democrats, the Camano Island Democrats, the Stanwood Democrats and the 10th District Democrats. She holds and MBA from Oklahoma City University and was President of the Camano Island Chamber of Commerce in 2014. She has made a priority of conservation efforts and expanding citizen access to Island County government. Rick Hannold is a retired naval Chief Petty Officer. His only clearly articulated stance is that politics needs to be more civil. Aubrey Vaughan is the interim commissioner, appointed after former Commissioner Kelly Emerson resigned. Vaughan has made organizing the budget early a priority. He not have the same experience and strengths as a candidate as Jacks. Kelly Bailey is a software tester for Amazon mobile devices. He had worked as a precinct committee officer for the Lost Lake Community Club during the last election cycle and was urged to run by his friends. Marc Henneman is a cookie-cutter Republican from Camano Island who vows to keep down taxes without any articulated vision for his plan (he is careful not to promise ‘no new taxes’ in interviews). He has stated earnestly that, if elected, he intends to buy a boat so he can attend each council meeting in person."
