State Assembly

Depending on where you live, you may have one of the below State Assembly races on your ballot.

  • Mark Kiley is running to unseat Assemblyman Shae Sortwell. Although Kiley has not taken as many explicit or specific stances as some other candidates, he is concerned about groundwater, supports renewable energy, intends to fully fund public education, and believes infrastructure investments are needed. Sortwell is extremely conservative and has flouted expert opinions on the coronavirus. His radical ideology extends to his professional comportment. In one notable incident, Sortwell displayed his gun to a Democratic legislative aide in another legislator's office, where guns were not permitted. Kiley is the more progressive choice.

  • As the parent of two children with autism who rely on BadgerCare, Emily Voight found that when she needed assistance, her state representative was dismissive and unhelpful. She has decided to run for the office herself. Voight is in favor of expanding BadgerCare, raising the minimum wage, and nonpartisan redistricting. She believes that the Assembly should be listening to science and taking action in response to the pandemic. Her opponent, Ron Tusler, most recently made the news for posting a racist meme. Tusler is also endorsed by Wisconsin Right to Life, a right wing group that wants to outlaw abortion, and has consistently supported legislation that limits access to reproductive care. Voight is the more progressive choice.
