Otros Candidatos
Conservative Rep. Leonard Christian is running for Legislative District 4’s Senate seat, from which Sen. Mike Padden is retiring. Christian first joined the Legislature in 2022 after defeating fellow Republican and incumbent Rob Chase for the Position 2 seat. Christian also previously served in the state House back in 2014 when he was appointed to fill the remainder of Larry Crouse’s term, though he was not retained by voters at that time. Outside of public office, Christian works in real estate.
In the past year, Christian has voted along party lines to the detriment of community needs. He recently took bad votes to oppose greater access to reproductive health care, human rights and dignity in our state’s private prisons, and funds to cover basic needs for Washington students. Christian has yet to release a detailed campaign platform in this race as of early June. However, if elected to the Senate, it is fair to assume he will not bring progressive solutions to the problems facing Washingtonians.
Spokane Valley Mayor Pam Haley is also in this race. Haley, a Republican, has served on the Spokane Valley City Council since 2016, when she was first appointed to fill a vacancy, and was elected as mayor in 2022. Outside of public service, Haley runs childcare facilities. In this race, she wants to cut funding for social programs, increase divisive rhetoric about public education curriculums, and pour even more money into law enforcement forces instead of investing in the community services that actually keep us safe.
Also in this race is Republican Mike Kelly, a local business owner and Spokane Valley City Planning Commission member. Kelly spent most of his career in real estate-adjacent work after an early conviction and incarceration for offenses related to selling drugs. He attributes his early sentence to a life of renewed purpose, accountability, and commitment to building an ethical life. Unfortunately, Kelly’s platform emphasizes conservative criminal legal policies that don't afford people the second chance that meant so much to his own life. In this race, Kelly is also promoting transphobic and misogynistic ideas through the disturbing rhetoric of protecting the “very essence of womanhood.” Like other far-right candidates across the country, Kelly is campaigning to remove public curriculums that teach accurate American history and multiculturalism. Kelly is one of the more extreme right-wing candidates in this race and does not represent the needs of Legislative District 4.
Republican Al Merkel is a business owner and Spokane Valley City Council member. In May of this year, an independent investigation uncovered Merkel had a “pattern of disrespectful behavior toward city staff” after a city staffer filed a formal complaint regarding safety concerns. Now, Merkel is running for a seat in the state Senate to bring conservative values to Olympia. If elected, he would take us backward on police accountability, housing solutions, and responsible development.
Paige Scott, the other Democrat in this race, has no campaign website or information available as of early June.
