Other Candidates
Republican incumbent Rep. Dan Newhouse is running for re-election to the 4th Congressional District seat. Newhouse previously served as the Washington Director of Agriculture and in the state House before being elected to Congress in 2014.
In office, he has been a staunch conservative vote, siding with Trump during his presidency 93 percent of the time. One of his top priorities is to prevent any level of gun safety reform that would make our communities safer. He has used his office to promote divisiveness and stoke fears while failing to address the real issues facing average Washingtonians. Last year, he supported legislation to construct a costly border wall and a single bill that would repeal incentives for climate-friendly practices.
Jerrod Sessler is once again challenging fellow Republican and incumbent representative Dan Newhouse for Washington’s Congressional District 4 seat in the U.S. House. Sessler is a Navy veteran, business owner, and former NASCAR driver.
Sessler boasts extremely far-right ideologies that promote some of the worst misinformation about immigration, public education, racial justice, and climate change. He supports Trump’s border wall and has made outrageous and racist claims about modern immigration patterns. Sessler doesn't believe that racial oppression occurs at any level and hatefully decries progressive legislation on climate as well as comprehensive sexual health education in our schools.
Nurse and MAGA candidate Tiffany Smiley is also challenging fellow Republican Dan Newhouse, one of the few Republicans in Congress who voted to impeach Trump. In 2022, Smiley challenged Patty Murray for a Senate seat. She is a far-right candidate who supports Donald Trump, including promoting his dangerous conspiracy about the 2020 election results. Smiley has also taken some of the strongest anti-abortion stances in recent Washington campaigns. She celebrated the overturn of Roe v. Wade and publicly praised Texas’ total ban with no exceptions. Smiley holds some of the most right-wing views in this race and is not a good candidate to represent all residents of the 4th Congressional District.
John Malan, running under the party "MAGA Democrat," is running a racist, conspiracy-laden campaign opposing reproductive freedom, the U.N., and clean green energy.
Veteran Ben Garcia III is running as an Independent in this race, but he identifies as a “real Republican.” In 2022, he accused the state Republican Party of suppressing the Latino vote, which he believes was in his favor. His website is not available as of mid-June.
Barry Knowles is an entrepreneur in doomsday construction. For his company Urban Foxhole, Knowles designed a bunker which he mass-marketed for people to install in their homes and which he claimed was a good place to store a cache of arms. Though Knowles is running as a Democrat in this race, he has previously run as a non-establishment GOP candidate with the tagline “we can’t be sheople.” His campaign website is empty as of early June, however it is clear Knowles is not running a progressive, community-focused campaign.
