Madrigal was born and raised in Mount Vernon, and now works at Community to Community, a women-led food sovereignty and immigration justice nonprofit. As the daughter of Latino farmworkers and a young woman of color, Madrigal would bring important representation to the city council.
Through her work with Community to Community and other local groups, Madrigal has organized popup clinics that vaccinated hundreds of our essential farmworkers, educated the community about the Washington Immigrant Relief Fund, and connected families to rental assistance programs. She has also has contributed to farmworker marches in both Washington and California that advocated for immigration reform and safer working conditions during summer heat waves.
If elected, Madrigal would prioritize creating healthy and affordable housing, funding gang prevention programs for youth, and creating bilingual and culturally appropriate programming for kids in schools.
Conservative Navor Tercero is running against Madrigal in his second attempt to represent Ward 1 on the Mount Vernon City Council. Tercero is the owner of a local upholstery repair business, and has served on the boards of many local business associations.
Tercero has some positive aspects to his platform - he wants to increase affordable housing in Mount Vernon, and says he would address mental health crises and homelessness by creating more behavioral health networks.
However, his main motivation is to be a strong pro-police voice on the council. He would focus more on enacting the "tough on crime" policies that have led to the mass-incarceration affecting our communities of color and low-income communities. His dedication to pumping more dollars into policing would leave our city with fewer resources for the services that actually keep people safe and housed.
