Depending on where you live, you may have the following city races on your ballot.

  • Kathy Downer is challenging incumbent William Armacost for the Sequim City Council, Position 1 seat. Downer has served in Position 2 on the city council since 2021. She previously served on the Sequim Planning Commission and volunteers in first aid instruction. Outside of public service, Downer worked in nursing for more than four decades before retiring in 2014.

Downer is running on a progressive platform to bring health, safety, and a high quality of life to Sequim. She believes that housing is a human right, and wants to respond to homelessness with strong services and increased preventative measure. Downer also wants to invest in expanding public transit options and providing municipal broadband for use by residents as well as local businesses. As a retired nurse, she is focused on making sure that mental health resources and substance abuse treatment services are widely available in Sequim. In this race, Downer has earned strong endorsements, including from the local Democrats, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, and a number of progressive elected leaders.

Downer has given up an incumbency advantage in her own seat in order to challenge far-right conservative and salon owner William Armacost, who joined the council in 2018. Former mayor Armacost publicly embraced QAnon conspiracy theories in an “anti-Semitic, anti-intellectual and histrionic” video from 2021. Sequim needs leaders who promote the truth and lead by listening to the community, not extremist conspiracies.

Kathy Downer is the clear choice in this race to bring progressive values and community leadership to Sequim City Council, Position 1.
