There are no good choices for Position 1 in the 8th Legislative District.
Republican Stephanie Barnard is the government and regional affairs manager of the Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce and has served as the vice-chair of the Franklin County Republican Party. She is running to cut funding for public infrastructure and services, take our state backwards on police accountability efforts, and favor large agricultural interests over protecting our air and water. Barnard is running with the backing of far-right leaders and will block progress on key community issues if elected.
The other candidate is Republican precinct committee officer Patrick Guettner, who is running on a regressive agenda. He is against raising the age of purchasing assault rifles from 18 to 21. He also wants to see the capital gains tax repealed, which was created to make the wealthiest Washingtonians finally pay their share. Guettner states, without proof and against multiple investigations, that there is fraud in mail-in voting, which has expanded voting accessibility for all in the state.

Because of a Tim Eyman initiative, the Legislature is required to submit any bill it passes that closes tax loopholes or raises revenue to a non-binding advisory vote. The Legislature had a historically productive 2022 session, resulting in several advisory votes appearing on the ballot. We hope the Legislature will change the law to remove these meaningless measures in the future.
