Spokane Ballot Measures
Depending on where you live, you may have the below city races on your ballot.
The Spokane City Council has proposed Proposition No. 1 to fund fire, police, and crime reduction programs in Spokane. The City Council is taking action because Spokane will lose a federal grant in 2019 that currently pays for 48 firefighters. At the same time, medical emergency calls have increased by 30 percent since 2017 while wildfires are also taking a great toll on local firefighters.
Spokane Proposition No. 1 would also add 20 new police officers to bolster the department's proactive community policing efforts. These officers would focus on property crimes, improving outreach to homeless members of our community, and strengthening the department's behavioral health unit.
Beginning in 2020, Proposition No. 1 would levy an additional $0.30 per $1,000 of assessed property value, which would increase the total levy from $3.30 to $3.60 and cost the owner of a median $204,000 home an additional $61 per year. However, Proposition No. 1 exempts eligible seniors citizens and people with disabilities from the levy increase. Vote YES on Proposition No. 1 to improve fire and public safety services in Spokane!
