Port Angeles School Board

Ruth Replogle is running for Port Angeles School Board Director, Position 1. Replogle is a recently retired middle school student teacher with 34 years of experience in the classroom, including 25 years in the Port Angeles School District. She also volunteers on the board of the Juan de Fuca Foundation for the Arts.

Replogle believes Port Angeles students deserve "a world-class public education, and the taxpayers of this community deserve to have their tax money spent wisely." She has committed to being on campus regularly to foster relationships with educators, students, and parents. Replogle believes this in-person relationship building will enhance trust and make everyone more comfortable sharing their ideas and concerns.

Replogle has also earned the endorsement of local educators due to her thoughtful approach and deep experience in local schools. For this reason, we recommend Ruth Replogle for Port Angeles School Board Director, Position 1.

Other Candidates

Sarah Methner is running for re-election to the Port Angeles School Board, Position 1. She was first elected in 2009 and is the longest-serving member of the current board. According to her website, Methner helped expand STEM and vocational technical programs. She also helped create a mobile health clinic in the district to provide essential care to students.

Methner's re-election campaign promises to continue the work she has pursued over the last sixteen years serving on the school board. Unfortunately, Methner recently upset many local educators in the district during negotiations for the teacher union contract. Along with the school board, her actions led to the paraprofessionals' strike in April 2024. In addition, in 2020, school board meeting attendee Lisa Hitt filed a complaint against then board VP Sarah Methner, alleging favoritism during a meeting about a proposed school levy.

While Methner has many years of experience, she has clearly lost the confidence of many local educators.

Kim Butler is also running for Port Angeles School Board Director, Position 1. Prior to moving to Port Angeles 3 years ago, Butler served as a nutritional director at Denver Public Schools.

Butler's campaign is focusing on raising test scores and increasing parental involvement in schools, saying "'The district is the backup to the parent.'" Butler proposed assigning more homework, implementing different curricula, and establishing summer boot camps as strategies to improve academic performance. However, she did not specify the "different curricula" she wishes to implement, and it's unclear how feasible it would be to implement this sweeping change.

We recommend Ruth Replogle for Port Angeles School Board Director, Position 1.
