Incumbent Democrat Jon Tunheim is running for re-election as the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney. First elected in 2010, Tunheim is focused on building strong partnerships with law enforcement, finding ways to lower recidivism, and reforming the county's bail system. Tunheim brings 30 years of criminal law experience to the position. During his tenure, the Prosecuting Attorney’s office opened an independent pre-trial services department and a mental health triage center to help those suffering from mental illness. Outside of the office, Tunheim serves as the current President of United Way of Thurston County and the Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys.
Tunheim has received criticism from the media and community advocates for not proactively pursuing criminal justice reforms and for a pattern of mismanagement that has led to delays and redundancies in the justice process. Also, it is worth noting that Jon Tunheim approved the county commissioners' bid to cooperate with ICE.
