Thurston County

Senator Maria Cantwell was first elected in 2000 and continues to represent our state's progressive values in our nation's capital. Sen. Cantwell has been a leader on a wide range of issues including reproductive rights, supporting the Children's Health Insurance Program, defending net neutrality, passing oil spill legislation to protect our water, working on clean energy policies, and many more.

Sen. Cantwell is opposed by Republican Susan Hutchison. Hutchison is a former news anchor and past chair of the state Republican Party. She ran for King County Executive in 2009 and lost by twenty points. Hutchison is well-known for being a party-line Republican and for her fierce defense of President Donald Trump, including calling fellow Republican Ted Cruz a "traitor" for not supporting the president's campaign.

Sen. Cantwell has been a tenacious advocate for the people of Washington state and is the best choice in this race.

Democratic Carolyn Long is an associate professor at the School of Politics at WSU Vancouver. Her platform includes protecting the health care of those with preexisting conditions, stabilizing the Affordable Care Act, and providing effective health care for those with addiction and mental illnesses. She is also prioritizing treating gun violence like a public health crisis, caring for veterans, reforming the tax code to make it fairer for middle-class families, and protecting Medicare and Social Security.

Long is running against incumbent Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, an extremely conservative Republican who has consistently sided with far-right members of her party on important issues. In particular, Rep. Herrera Beutler voted in favor of congressional Republicans’ $1.5 trillion tax giveaway to corporations and the wealthy few.

Long is the best choice for Congress in the 3rd Congressional District.

Representative Denny Heck is a moderate Democrat who has had a long and effective career in both the private and public sectors. In Olympia, he served as a five-term state representative, House majority leader, and chief of staff to former Gov. Booth Gardner, and is the co-founder of TVW. In Congress, he has fought to make college more affordable, reduce health care costs, create middle class jobs, and ensure veterans get the benefits they have earned. He supports immigration policies that create a path to citizenship and has been working this year to help prevent health care premium increases due to Trump's policies.

Heck is running against Republican Joseph Brumbles, a self-described constitutional conservative. His campaign platform is undetailed and states that he is standing for "liberty." He suggests solving the issue of affordable energy with the free market and not taxing fossil fuels, and he wants to reduce the size of government by eliminating federal agencies.

Heck is the best choice in this race.

Democrat Anneliese Feld is running to unseat Republican Rep. Andrew Barkis in the 2nd Legislative District House Position 1. Feld wants to work across the aisle to fix our state's upside-down tax code and address the growing homelessness crisis in the Puget Sound region. Additionally, Feld believes that local elected officials must be responsive to their constituents regardless of ideological differences and aims to increase residents' access to elected officials.

Feld faces an uphill battle against Rep. Barkis, who is a party-line Republican. Throughout his tenure, Rep. Barkis has opposed most progressive reforms, including voting against equal pay protections for women this past legislative session. Feld is the best choice in this race.

Career educator Erin Frasier is seeking to unseat incumbent Republican Representative Jim Walsh. Prior to running for public office, Frasier served as a Director of the Pacific County Programming office and as the Associate Dean of Workforce Educations for Grays Harbor College. She recently completed a Doctorate of Education in organizational leadership from Brandman University. Frasier is prioritizing public safety, access to affordable health care, and building additional support for community hospitals.

Frasier is running against Republican Rep. Jim Walsh. In his first term in Olympia, Walsh had a highly partisan record and refused to work across party lines to solve problems.

Frasier is the clear progressive choice in this race.

Democratic Rep. Brian Blake is seeking re-election to the 19th Legislative District House Position 2. Since 2002, Rep. Blake has prioritized the creation of local family wage jobs and funding for K-12 education. Blake is a moderate Democrat who has been willing to buck party leadership when necessary to put his constituents first.

Blake's opponent is Republican and Marine Corps reservist Joel McIntire. McEntire is a teacher who is running on an anti-Seattle platform that offers no explanations or solutions. Rep. Blake is the clear choice in this race.

Democrat John Thompson is running for Legislative District 20 House Position 1. Thompson is a Vietnam veteran and an active community leader. Thompson has sat on the board of directors for the United Way and the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce and currently sits on the board of Cascade Regional Blood Services. Thompson is running to ensure that K-12 schools, colleges, vocational education programs are fully funded and is committed to protecting well-paying jobs, veterans, and people experiencing homelessness. As a gun owner, he also supports practical gun safety measures.

Though Thompson suffered a tragedy this past summer, he has been running a competitive race against incumbent Republican Rep. Richard Debolt. Debolt has a terrible track record on environmental and social justices issues. He generally sides with the far-right members of his caucus.

Thompson's campaign has generated a groundswell of community support. He is the best choice in this race.

Former small business owner Brennan Bailey is running for 20th Legislative District House Position 2. For the past seven years, Bailey has served as the Chehalis School Board President and knows firsthand the challenge facing K-12 schools in rural communities. He believes in the importance of bipartisan compromise and is focused on lowering the unemployment rate in Southwestern Washington, improving education, and supporting small business owners.

Brennan's opponent is incumbent Republican Rep. Ed Orcutt. Rep. Orcutt has been an obstacle to progress on improving K-12 education and environmental protections. This year, Orcutt also voted against the requirement for insurers to cover reproductive health care and opposed a bill that prohibits conversion therapy on LGBTQ minors.

Brennan Bailey is the clear choice in this race.

Representative Laurie Dolan is an emerging progressive leader in the Washington state House. Prior to serving the people of the 22nd Legislative District, Rep. Dolan was an educator and a former director for Spokane Public Schools for more than 30 years. First elected in 2016, Rep. Dolan has served as the Vice Chair of the Education and State Government Committees where she fought for workers' rights and to fully fund education.

Representative Dolan is opposed by Independent C. Davis, who is running on an anti-tax libertarian platform. Rep. Dolan is the clear choice in this race.

First elected in 2016, Representative Beth Doglio is seeking re-election to the 22nd Legislative District House Position 2. Prior to joining the Legislature, Rep. Doglio worked as the Campaign Director at Climate Solutions and was the founding executive director of Washington Conservation Voters. In 2018, Rep. Doglio fought hard to improve the lives of sexual assault victims and increase environmental protections throughout the region.

Rep. Doglio is opposed by Libertarian candidate Allen Acosta, a radical right-wing activist and hardline gun advocate. Rep. Doglio is the clear progressive choice in this race.

Democrat Irene Bowling is running for the 35th Legislative District Senate seat. A lifelong Washington resident, small business owner, and educator, Bowling hopes to unite communities by pursuing solutions that will bring more jobs and educational opportunities to the 35th Legislative District. Bowling aims to address the rising costs of medical expenses as well as growing concerns over the need for state protection for local waterways. Bowling will also work to ensure that both rural and urban communities have access to quality K-12 education and health care.

Bowling is challenging "Democratic" Senator Tim Sheldon, who actually caucuses with the Senate Republicans and has a reliably conservative voting record. From opposing pay increases for teachers to voting against protections for abortion and LGBTQ rights, Sen. Sheldon has done a poor job representing the working families living in the district.

Bowling is the clear choice in this race.

James Thomas is running for the 35th Legislative District House Position 1. Thomas is Chair of the Economic Development Council of Mason County, as well as a member of the Mason County Planning Commission.

Thomas is challenging Republican Rep. Dan Griffey. In the Legislature, Rep. Griffey has taken a hard-line conservative approach to most legislation. He voted against prohibiting conversion therapy on LGBTQ youth, opposed expanding women's health care access, and voted against a common-sense gun safety law that banned bump stocks.

Thomas is the best choice in this race.

David Daggett is a retired Boeing engineering leader who is now running for the 35th Legislative District House Position 2. He is running as a fiscally conservative Democrat who is focused on creating more environmentally friendly jobs and reducing income inequality.

Daggett is challenging Republican Rep. Drew MacEwen, who is on the wrong side of a host of progressive issues. In the past, he has opposed increasing the minimum wage and requiring employers to provide sick leave to workers. He has also opposed this year's ban on bump stocks, democracy-expanding automatic voter registration, and prohibiting conversion therapy on LGBTQ minors.

Daggett is a better choice over Rep. MacEwen in this race.

Democrat Mary Hall is running for re-election for Thurston County Auditor. In 2013, Hall became the first Democrat to be elected to the auditor position in 71 years. Since taking office, Hall has worked across the aisle and has successfully advocated for same-day voter registration, automatic voter registration, pre-registration for 16 and 17 year-olds, and the Washington Voting Rights Act. Hall is passionate about her commitment to public service and making voting more accessible for all eligible residents.

Hall is opposed by independent candidate Stuart Holmes. Holmes, who is running on a platform of accountability and transparency, has only been endorsed by Republicans, and lacks broad support from the community. Hall is the best choice in this race.

Democrat Tye Menser is running for Thurston County Commissioner in District 3. Previously, Menser served on the Water Conservancy Board and spent a decade serving the community in the Thurston County Public Defense office. Menser is running on a comprehensive platform that includes planning for the projected 100,000 new residents moving to Thurston County by 2040, preserving the local farming economy, and working to restore the county's fiscal health. He is also focused on ensuring that Thurston County leads in coordinated efforts to address regional housing affordability, homelessness, and drug addiction.

Menser faces a competitive race against incumbent Commissioner Bud Blake, who has been a moderately conservative voice on the commission and has not pursued progressive reforms in his tenure. Though Blake has worked to address some of the county's mental health and drug addiction issues with the Behavioral Health Organization, Blake and his fellow conservative-leaning independent commissioners on the board have struggled to keep the county's reserves within reason and abstained from voting on regional climate goals.

Menser is the best choice in this race.

First elected in 2000, Supreme Court Justice Susan Justice Owens brings more 40 years of legal experience to Washington's Supreme Court. Prior to serving on the court, Justice Owens served nineteen years as a District Court Judge in Western Clallam County. Justice Owens has been a leader in the judicial community on addressing the impacts of domestic violence on children. Nationally, Justice Owens is a judicial trainer on this topic and participated in the writing of the Northwest Tribal Judges Domestic Violence Manual. Justice Owens is running unopposed for re-election and has earned your support.

Supreme Court Justice Steve Gonzalez has earned national recognition for his judicial expertise and work to increase access to the judicial system. Before serving on the Supreme Court, Justice Gonzalez served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and on the King County Superior Court for more than 10 years hearing criminal, juvenile, and family law cases. Justice Gonzalez is devoted to working for the people of Washington and serves as a board member for the Washington Leadership Institute, an organization that supports emerging community leaders from diverse backgrounds. As one of the few multi-lingual justices, he chairs the Interpreter Commission. Justice Gonzalez is rated "Exceptionally Well Qualified" by 10 independent bar associations in Washington state.

Gonzalez is being challenged by Bellevue-based attorney Nathan Choi, who ran unsuccessfully for a judicial seat on the Court of Appeals in 2016. Since then, Choi has faced numerous ethical controversies. In 2017, the King County Bar Association formally reprimanded Choi for violating KCBA's fair campaign practices guidelines by releasing misleading campaign materials and failing to follow state candidate rules. In February of this year, Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson formally filed a lawsuit against Nathan Choi in a Thurston County Court. The case is still open.

Justice Steve Gonzalez is the best choice for Supreme Court Justice Position 8.

Washington Supreme Court Justice Sheryl Gordon McCloud has been a fierce defender of constitutional rights and has written the decision in several consequential court cases. Prior to serving on the Supreme Court, she worked as an accomplished appellate court attorney for nearly three decades and was a founding member of the Washington Appellate Lawyers Association. Her strong judicial track record has earned a rating of "Exceptionally Well Qualified" by 10 independent state bar associations, including Washington Women Lawyers and the newly-minted Veterans Bar Association.

Justice McCloud in running unopposed for Position 9 and deserves your vote.

Deputy Solicitor General Rebecca Glasgow is running unopposed for this open seat on the Court of Appeals. For ten years, Glasgow has served the people of Washington in the Attorney General’s Office and as the lead counsel to Secretary of State Kim Wyman. Glasgow supports equity in the legal system and believes that judges must be “impartial, fair, and unbiased” because they are the “guardians of the rule of law and the rights of every person.”

Currently, Glasgow is a board member for the Campaign for Equal Justice and the Strophy Foundation. She is also a former president of Thurston County Volunteer Legal Services and Washington Women Lawyers, an independent bar association. Glasgow’s record of public service, knowledge of the law, and courtroom conduct has earned a judicial rating of “Exceptionally Well Qualified” from six independent bar associations.
