Federal

Since Patty Murray was first elected in 1992, the "Mom in Tennis Shoes" has been an incredible champion for women, working people, veterans, and an economy that works for everyone. The fourth-ranking Democrat in the Senate, she has earned the respect of Democrats and Republicans alike by forging agreements on the budget, education, women's health, and other critical issues, all while continuing to fight for working people across our state.

Her opponent is former Washington State Republican Party Chair Chris Vance. Vance, a partisan operative who championed George W. Bush for president, has led a lackluster campaign and does not bring new ideas to the table. Murray's leadership, experience, and progressive values make her the clear choice in this race.

7th Congressional District

State Senator Pramila Jayapal has a long history of effective civic leadership on immigration reform, economic fairness, civil liberties, and women’s issues. She founded OneAmerica (formerly Hate Free Zone) in 2001 and built it into the largest immigrant rights organization in the state and a national model. She also played a key role on the Mayoral Advisory Committee that negotiated Seattle’s $15 minimum wage. As a state senator, she has been tireless and effective speaking out for racial equity, voting access, and a more progressive budget. We recommend Pramila in this crowded field of progressives running to replace Rep. Jim McDermott.

King County Councilmember and former legislator Joe McDermott is also running for this seat. McDermott, who has no relation to retiring Rep. Jim McDermott, has been a strong advocate for transit, marriage equality, gun violence prevention, and other issues. He has pledged to reject any independent expenditure money in his campaign and says he is running to end the special interest dominance in politics.

Also in this race are Democrats Arun Jhaveri and Don Rivers, Independents Leslie Regier and Carl Cooper, and Republican Scott Sutherland.

The voters of the 7th Congressional District are lucky to have a strong slate of progressive candidates to choose from. We recommend Jayapal in this race.

9th Congressional District

Representative Adam Smith is a moderate Democrat who has been a reliable vote on progressive taxation and immigration reform. Smith has worked hard to connect with and represent his new constituents after the 9th CD became one of the most racially diverse districts in the state during the redistricting process. He continues to be an advocate for greater equality, and fought House Republicans' efforts to slash food stamps in the most recent farm bill.

A good candidate facing Smith is Jesse Wineberry, a former state representative endorsed by the United Black Clergy of Washington who was inspired to run by Bernie Sanders. Also in this race is Democrat Daniel Smith, another "Berniecrat," Doug Basler, an unknown Republican from Kent, and Independent Jeary Flener. Smith has received the majority of our partner endorsements and deserves your vote.

Statewide

Governor Jay Inslee has been a strong, principled leader on the important challenges facing Washington, including tackling transportation problems, increasing the minimum wage, and fighting global warming. He has also worked to fund schools by closing unjust tax loopholes and fought to close the gender pay gap. Before he was elected Governor in 2012, Inslee represented both sides of the Cascades in Congress, opposed the Iraq war, and worked to increase accountability and oversight for Wall Street banks.

In contrast, Republican Bill Bryant opposes the Washington Voting Rights Act, is opposed to many public transportation projects, and is an obstacle to closing unjust tax loopholes. Also in this race are Democrats James Deal, Johnathon Dodds, and Patrick O'Rourke; Republicans Goodspaceguy and Bill Hirt; Mary Martin of the Socialist Workers Party; Independent Steve Rubenstein; David Blomstrom of the Fifth Republic Party; and Christian Pierre Joubert of the Holistic Party, none of whom are running competitive campaigns. While Inslee has his work cut out for him in his second term, we believe his strong moral compass and vision for improving our state make him the best choice in this race.

Tina Podlodowski is running for Secretary of State to increase voter participation and turnout as the state’s chief elections officer. She is a former Microsoft executive who also served on the Seattle City Council and has strong track record of non-profit leadership.

Podlodowski is challenging incumbent Republican Kim Wyman for failing to improve declining voter participation. Wyman has opposed the Washington Voting Rights Act and has refused to support common-sense measures to increase voter participation such as Election Day voter registration and pre-registration for 16- and 17-year-olds. Timothy Turner, a Libertarian who is not a credible candidate, is also in this race. Podlodowski deserves your vote.

Jeff Sprung is a lawyer and former Planned Parenthood Votes board member who is running to increase transparency and accountability in state government. He previously worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney investigating and prosecuting corruption in low-income housing programs. He supports increasing whistleblower protections to better identify fraud and potential inefficiencies in government. Sprung is running the strongest campaign and has received the most support from our progressive partners.

Former Pierce County Auditor and current Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy is another good candidate in this race. She is running to use her experience managing large budgets and agencies to improve efficiency and transparency.

Their opponent is the socially-conservative Republican Senator Mark Miloscia, who earned dual endorsements along with Sprung from our labor partners at SEIU 925, SEIU 775, and the Washington Federation of State Employees. Miloscia also earned a sole endorsement from the Washington State Council of Fire Fighters. Unfortunately, Miloscia supports allowing employers to deny coverage for birth control and co-sponsored a bill that could ban many forms of birth control. We're concerned that if elected, Miloscia could use his office to launch politically-fueled investigations of Planned Parenthood and other women's health groups.

Also in this race is Independent Mark Wilson and No Party Preference candidate David Golden. Sprung is the best choice in this race.

Rep. Chris Reykdal is a progressive legislator from Thurston County who has been an outspoken advocate for education funding and income inequality issues. As a former teacher and former school board member, Reykdal has seen the struggle schools are facing to get their job done. He supports reforming our state's broken tax system to ensure our public schools have the funding they need to provide a quality education for every student. Reykdal currently has two children in Washington's public schools.

As the state Insurance Commissioner, Mike Kreidler has brought a range of experience to the position and defended the interests of Washington residents against big insurance companies. Kreidler cut insurance rates, required that contraceptives be included in prescription drug coverage for women, and helped increase the transparency of the health insurance market. If re-elected, Kreidler will work on expanding health care access, limiting insurance company exploitation, and eliminating credit scoring as a determinant of insurance rates. Kreidler faces Libertarian Justin Murta and Republican Richard Schrock, neither of whom is running a credible campaign.

Legislative Races

Depending on where you live, you may have one of the below legislative races on your ballot.

1st Legislative District

The Progressive Voters Guide recommends Guy Palumbo in this race. He is a small business owner and former Amazon.com employee who now serves as a fire commissioner and as the chair of the Snohomish County Planning Commission. Palumbo is running an energetic campaign to reduce traffic gridlock and solve our transportation problems, much like he did as an activist in 2015 when he successfully advocated for additional funding for highway 522. Palumbo strongly supports reproductive freedom and believes we need to close tax loopholes to fund education.

Palumbo faces Republican Mindie Wirth and Democratic Rep. Luis Moscoso in this race. Wirth is a traditional Republican who would be an obstacle to fixing our state’s regressive tax system and closing loopholes. Moscoso is an existing House member and labor leader. We believe that Palumbo offers the strongest potential as a member of the state Senate and is the best choice in this race.

Kirkland City Councilwoman Shelley Kloba is running for this open seat vacated by Luis Moscoso, who is running for state Senate. Kloba has been a strong voice for parks and human services in Kirkland, serving on the Eastside Human Resources Forum and the regional Domestic Violence Task Force. She previously served two years as the Washington State PTA Legislative Director where she advocated for education funding, and just finished a six-year term as a trustee for the Lake Washington Schools Foundation. Kloba is now running for the legislature because of her strong commitment to affordable housing and education funding.

She faces Democrats Aaron Moreau-Cook, Darshan Rauniyar, and Kyoko Matsumoto-Wright, who are not running competitive campaigns, as well as Republican Jim Langston, a child care center owner who does not share the same breadth of experience as Kloba. Because of her longstanding commitment to parks, education, and housing options that work for all, Kloba deserves your vote.

He faces Republican Rep. Chad Magendanz, who is the only East King County legislator of either party to vote against the transportation budget that will improve I-405, reduce traffic gridlock, and upgrade our transit options. Jason Ritchie is a rising star who is running an energetic campaign to defeat the incumbent Republican Rep. Jay Rodne. Ritchie started a business remodeling homes for people with disabilities after his father had a stroke and suffered from limited mobility.

The incumbent Rodne was widely criticized this year for making offensive anti-Islamic statements that shook Snoqualmie's many hardworking Muslim families. Rodne has become an embarrassment to the people he is supposed to represent. Ritchie's strong commitment to fully funding education, ensuring healthcare access for all, and stronger protections for the environment would make him a welcome change for this district.

Democrat Matt Larson has been the Mayor of Snoqualmie for more than 10 years. Larson, a former small business owner of a home design company, has helped guide Snoqualmie through some of its toughest land use decisions during his tenure on the planning commission, parks board, city council, and now as mayor. He's prioritizing reducing traffic and expanding transit options for Eastside residents, as well as funding education.

Larson and Burner are facing Republican Paul Graves, a political newcomer with a short resume who works as a lawyer at Perkins Coie in Seattle. We lean toward the progressive Burner in this important race.

Representative Tina Orwall is a reliable vote on most progressive issues. In Olympia, she has sponsored legislation to prevent truancy issues for students and has also sponsored a bill to help fight human trafficking. Chopp is running unopposed and deserves your vote.

John Lovick is a former state representative and former Snohomish County executive who is seeking the seat vacated when Rep. Hans Dunshee was appointed to the Snohomish County Council. Lovick was also elected as the Snohomish County sheriff in 2007 and successfully merged the county jail with the sheriff’s office. Brooke Valentine is a passionate education advocate who has served on many advisory committees with the Kent School District, including her leadership as co-chair of the recent successful levy campaign "Citizens for Kent Schools." She has also served as Legislative Director and in other various roles on the Washington state PTA.

Her opponent, far-right incumbent Rep. Mark Hargrove, said during a debate this year that investing $15,000 in safety measures for kids' school buses was "too much money." Hargrove has also been a consistent opponent of women's health choices and LGBT equality. For her leadership around smart education solutions, Valentine deserves your vote.

State Supreme Court

Chief Justice Barbara Madsen has led our state Supreme Court in a fair and impartial manner through a series of high profile cases. First elected in 1992, Madsen was only the third woman to ever serve on our highest court. She has won numerous awards for her service, especially for her work creating opportunities for young female lawyers and judges. Despite Republican efforts to politicize our court over rulings about education funding and several Tim Eyman initiatives, Madsen has maintained a steadfast commitment to upholding equal justice under law.

Madsen is opposed by Greg Zempel, a Republican prosecutor from Kittitas County. Zempel has said he is running because he disagrees with some recent decisions. Also in the race is "Zamboni" John Scannell, a perennial candidate who is not running a credible campaign. Madsen is by far the best-qualified candidate in this race.

Eric Newman is another good choice for King County Superior Court Position 44. Newman is a veteran and trial lawyer who has served for three years on the King County District Court as a judge presiding over hearings and trials in criminal and civil cases. He has also volunteered at El Centro de la Raza for a legal clinic that serves immigrants and as a bus driver for a women's shelter. He shares many Democratic district endorsements and the King County Labor Council endorsement with Moore.

Also in this race is Jackson Schmidt, an attorney who has spent many years doing pro bono work for the Pike Place Market but has not received the same level of endorsements from partners. We lean toward Moore as she would bring a new perspective to a bench dominated by male judges.

Seattle Ballot Measures

Depending on where you live, you may have the following city races on your ballot.

VOTE NO

Vote NO on Initiative 123

When the 2001 earthquake shook Seattle, it left us with a crumbling, dangerous Alaskan Way Viaduct and a heavily damaged seawall. After many years of public input, environmental review, and a transparent budgeting process, city and community leaders came together and agreed on a Waterfront Seattle plan to rebuild the seawall and create a public waterfront that connects new parks, bike and pedestrian paths, and access to Elliott Bay.

The elevated park created by Initiative 123 directly conflicts with that waterfront plan and the public process that created it. Additionally, the initiative's details have caused serious concern with everyone from the League of Women Voters to labor unions to the AIA Architectural Group of Seattle. There is no defined funding source for I-123, though it says the city's general fund will cover it--putting at risk more critical budgeted items like affordable housing and bike and pedestrian safety. It also forms an unelected board called the “Downtown Waterfront Preservation and Development Authority” to develop a plan that the City will then be legally obligated to pay for, no matter what the cost.

Vote NO on Initiative 123.

VOTE YES

Vote YES on Proposition 1

Seattle is one of the fastest growing cities in the country, which is pushing rent and real estate prices higher every month. As a result, many working families, seniors, and young people are struggling to keep a roof over their head. Many are forced to live far away from where they work - making traffic worse - or leave Seattle altogether just to afford their rent. We must do better.

Seattle's Proposition 1 is $290 million replacement and expansion of the existing affordable housing levy that would cost the average homeowner $122 per year. This critically important proposition would build 2,150 new affordable apartments and provide emergency rental help for 4,500 families on the brink of being homeless. Vote YES on Proposition 1 to ensure Seattle remains a place where working people, seniors, and young people can afford to live!

Vote YES for Maple Valley fire protection services

Ensuring fair and consistent funding for emergency services is critical to safeguarding Washington’s communities. That’s why the Maple Valley Fire & Life Safety department has proposed replacing the current universal property tax levy with a "benefit charge" property tax fee that applies only to structures with increased fire risk that are over 400 square feet. The new proposal reduces the tax rate from $1.50 to $1.00 per $1,000 of assessed value. To maintain fire protection across Maple Valley, vote yes on Proposition 1.
