This election will be held on November 4, 2025. Incumbent Republican Delegate Geary Higgins faces a challenge from Democrat John Chilton McAuliff in HD-30.

Virginia’s House District 30 covers portions of Loudoun and Fauquier counties. In the 2024 election, it leaned Republican by narrow single-digit margins.

Democrat John McAuliff studied at the University of Richmond. After college, he returned home to care for his grandmother, converting her family house into Chilton House Suites, which has welcomed over 10,000 visitors and boosted local businesses. During the pandemic, led a local economic development group while volunteering with the Loudoun Medical Reserve Corps. He spent three years as Chief of Staff to Delegate David Reid, served on the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Team, and in President Biden’s Office of Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation.


John McAuliff has championed Main Street prosperity through his leadership of local economic development groups, his support for legislation giving first-time entrepreneurs tax credits for new businesses, as well as tax credits for first-time home buyers in rural areas.


As a former Senior Advisor at the US Department of Agriculture, he is committed to protecting prime farmland from data center developments by expanding conservation easements. He has also committed to regulating utility monopolies to lower bills and cut red tape to boost renewable energy development.


As a member of the Loudoun Medical Reserve Corps, he has pledged to increase funding and access to mental healthcare in schools and hospitals.


He has promised to reinstate the college tuition freeze in Virginia and to halt the growth of student debt.


McAuliff has committed to supporting HJ 1, which would enshrine reproductive rights in the Virginia Constitution.


The Opposition

Incumbent Republican Delegate Geary Higgins was first elected in 2023 after serving on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors and School Board. Progressive voters may oppose his focus on business tax cuts over public investments, resistance to criminal justice reforms, and support for strict parental controls in schools. His alignment with Governor Youngkin’s agenda and reluctance to expand reproductive and social services risks alienating constituents seeking equity-driven policy solutions.
