Judy Schwank is the Democratic candidate for the Pennsylvania State Senate seat in the 11th senate district. Prior to taking her current office, Schwank was the first female Berks County Commissioner. She recently received the Pennsylvania League of Cities Outstanding Public Service Citation for her many years of varied service work in her community and throughout the state.
Schwank’s record is progressive. She is best known for proposing a statewide task force in 2016 for finding more effective ways to prevent and treat opioid addiction. This spring, she introduced legislation that would ensure low-income Pennsylvanians, including seniors, would still be eligible to receive state assistance after being issued their COVID-19 stimulus checks from the federal government. She voted against legislation that would have restricted access to voting for people who could not produce photo ID, which disproportionately affects low-income folks, people of color, the elderly, and people with disabilities. She has voted to uphold developmental restrictions in favor of protecting the environment. During the pandemic, Judy Schwank voted to provide protective gear, testing, hazard pay, family leave, and preserve disaster declarations put in place to protect Pennsylvanians, even as Republicans almost unanimously voted against all of these measures.
Schwank is being challenged by Republican candidate Annette Baker. Baker is a former environmental scientist, but does not offer plans for renewable energy or addressing the fossil fuel industry. She is highly religious and has stated one of her top priorities as being able to encourage a resurgence of faith in God. Overall, Baker offers no substantial policy stances.Judy Schwank is the clear progressive choice in this race.
