Frank Dermody is the Democratic candidate for the Pennsylvania State House seat in the 34th legislative district. Dermody has held this seat since 1990. Dermody grew up in coal country in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. His father died when he was seven and his mother worked full-time to support his family. Frank attended Columbia University and went on to get a law degree in the early 1980s. He returned to Pennsylvania to work as the assistant public defender in Harrisburg and then as the Assistant District Attorney in Allegheny County, prosecuting serious crimes. In 1994, Rep. Dermody was selected by House leaders to investigate charges against Supreme Court Justice Rolf Larsen, which led to Larsen’s impeachment and removal from office. Darmody became the legislative whip for the Democratic Party in 2009. His ethical performance led to his unanimous election as the Democratic Leader of the chamber in 2011.
Frank Dermody has championed many pieces of progressive legislation over the years. In 2017 he co-sponsored a bill to have some criminal records expunged from people’s history to reduce discrimination. In 2009, he also co-sponsored a bill to have some juvenile records expunged. In 2007, he co-sponsored a bill to expand the use of green energy and in 2005 he also co-sponsored a bill to increase the minimum wage. During the pandemic, Frank Dermody voted to provide protective gear, testing, hazard pay, family leave, and preserve disaster declarations put in place to protect Pennsylvanians, even as Republicans almost unanimously voted against all of these measures.
Frank Dermody has drawn a Republican challenger, Carrie DelRosso. DelRosso, a local public relations executive, says she is running to cut worker pensions. She has spent most of the primary season on twitter demanding the removal of health protections.
Dermody is the clear progressive choice in this race.Frank Dermody
