Joe Tate is an incumbent Democrat running for his fourth term to the Michigan House of Representatives. He currently represents the 10th District and is running to represent the 9th District, due to redistricting. Tate is the first Black Speaker of the House.
Tate served in a historic legislative session with a Democratic majority that took major strides forward on key progressive issues. The Democratic majority passed the Reproductive Health Act, ensuring all Michiganders can make their own decisions about how and when to start a family, gave Michigan's kids free school breakfast and lunch and additional funds to support our students, and passed common sense gun violence prevention measures. Putting hard-working Michiganders' first, they also quintupled the Working Families Tax Credit, got rid of the retirement tax, and got rid of so-called "right to work" anti-worker legislation to ensure workers have bargaining power to stand up to greedy corporations. Tate also helped expand the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and codify parts of the Affordable Care Act into law that protect LGBTQ+ Michiganders from discrimination in healthcare, housing, and the workplace.
Tate is the son of a firefighter and public school school teacher. Before serving in the Michigan House, Joe Tate was an all-star football player and captain at Michigan State University, where he graduated with a degree in Public Policy and then played in the NFL. After two years in the NFL, he joined the Marines and served two deployments in Afghanistan. When he was honorably discharged, he came back to Michigan to earn two Master's degrees from the University of Michigan in Business Administration and Science in Environmental Policy and Planning.
Tate believes in creating an economy that works for all, where wages meet the cost of living and housing is affordable. He supports protecting reproductive freedom and passed common sense gun violence prevention measures including safe storage and universal background checks. His priorities include investing in our schools and he has fought for teacher pay raises, reduced class sizes, and expanded pre-k. Tate will fight to support workers’ rights and ensure equality for the LGBTQ+ community.
Tate has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan Association for Justice, Michigan Education Association, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Service Employees International Union - Michigan, and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan.
Tate is running against MAGA Republican Michele Lundgren. Lundgren is facing felony charges for being one of the false Trump electors in 2020 and regularly spreads conspiracy theories about our elections. She is against reproductive freedom and common sense gun violence prevention measures.
Joseph Tate is the most progressive choice in this race.
