Jason Hoskins is an incumbent Democrat seeking re-election for his second term representing the 18th District for the Michigan House of Representatives. He currently serves on a multitude of legislative committees, including as chair of the Economic Development and Small Business committee.
Hoskins served in a historic legislative session with a Democratic majority that took major strides forward on key progressive issues. The Democratic majority passed the Reproductive Health Act, ensuring all Michiganders can make their own decisions about how and when to start a family, gave Michigan's kids free school breakfast and lunch and additional funds to support our students, and passed common sense gun violence prevention measures. Putting hard-working Michiganders' first, they also quintupled the Working Families Tax Credit, got rid of the retirement tax, and got rid of so-called "right to work" anti-worker legislation to ensure workers have bargaining power to stand up to greedy corporations. Hoskins also helped expand the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and codify parts of the Affordable Care Act into law that protect LGBTQ+ Michiganders from discrimination in healthcare, housing, and the workplace.
Hoskins grew up as the son of two union members, graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor’s in Political Science and a Master’s in Public Administration, and earned a law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy. He has served as vice president for the Michigan Metro-Detroit Branch of the ACLU and worked as a staff member for a state representative and state senator.
Hoskins supports workers’ rights and believes in creating an economy that works for all, where wages meet the cost of living, housing is affordable, and the wealthy pay their fair share. He supports protecting reproductive freedom, common sense gun violence prevention measures, fully funding public education and protecting our air, water, and environment. He will fight to end the school to prison pipeline, eliminating bail systems that prey on the poorest citizens, ensuring LGBTQ+ citizens are equally protected under the law, protecting abortion access, and improving Michigan’s healthcare system by making prescription drugs more affordable, expanding mental health care, and addressing the rise in substance abuse.
Hoskins has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Equality Michigan Action Network, Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan Education Association, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Service Employees International Union - Michigan, Sierra Club - Michigan, and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan.
Hoskins is running against Republican Mordechai Klainberg.
Jason Hoskins is the most progressive choice in this race.
