Alex Garza is an incumbent Democrat seeking re-election for his third term in the Michigan House of Representatives. Before being elected to the House, Garza was a legislative aide to former state representative, now Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib. Garza also worked as a legislative assistant at the Detroit Service Center, then director of constituent relations for Rep. Stephanie Chang, and in 2013 was elected to the Taylor City Council. When he was re-elected in 2017 he became the city council chairman. He became a state representative after winning election in 2018.
Garza’s priorities include expanding health care coverage and capping prescription drug costs, repealing right-to-work legislation, lowering auto insurance rates and securing local road funding to fix broken infrastructure, ensuring our seniors are taken care of and comfortable in retirement by repealing the senior pension tax and investing more in programs for seniors, and keeping public money out of the hands of for-profit charter schools.
Garza is endorsed by eight of our partners: Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, Michigan AFL-CIO, American Federation of Teachers Michigan, Sierra Club Michigan Chapter, Clean Water Action, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan Education Association, and Equality Michigan.
Garza is running against Republican James DeSana. DeSana is anti-reproductive rights and is endorsed by the anti-choice organization Right to Life of Michigan. He holds irresponsible views on guns and is endorsed by the right-wing group Michigan Trump Republicans.
Alex Garza is the most progressive choice in this race.
