7th Senate District

Jeremy Moss is an incumbent Democrat running for his second term to the Michigan State Senate. He serves on the Economic and Small Business Development, Local Government, and Regulatory Reform committees.

One of Moss’ main priorities is open and honest government. When he was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives he worked to pass 10 bills in the House that would open up government records to public scrutiny by subjecting the governor’s office and state legislature to the principles of the Freedom of Information Act. His other priorities include reforming the criminal justice system, protecting voting rights, expanding access to affordable housing, fully funding education and holding charter schools accountable, ensuring Michigan is prepared for climate change, protecting reproductive freedom, passing common sense gun violence prevention measures, and ensuring equality for all Michiganders.

He has also been working to restore the harsh cuts to local governments and school districts that have impacted the lives of working families, retirees and students.

Natalie Price is a Democrat running for the Michigan House of Representatives for the 5th District. Price comes from a long line of strong women and community organizing. She is a former high school teacher and served her community as a Berkley city council member.

Price’s priorities will include fighting to increase funding for Michigan schools and ensure it is equitable, with resources going to where they are needed most. Price will work to support investments in renewable energy while creating high-quality jobs, protect abortion access, fight for fair wages and affordable health care, work to protect LGBTQ Michiganders, and address gun violence.

Laurie Pohutsky is an incumbent Democrat seeking re-election for her third term in the Michigan House of Representatives. She is a graduate of Michigan State University where she volunteered with the Listening Ear Crisis Center, the oldest all-volunteer crisis center in the United States. After moving back to the Metro Detroit area, she joined the Livonia Democratic Club and often attends grassroots events.

Pohutsky’s priorities include fighting for state-funded Medicare for All, expanding the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, providing teachers with competitive salaries and benefits, repairing Michigan’s roads, co-sponsoring polluter pay legislation, protecting and cleaning our water, protecting abortion access, and creating programs that provide health care for seniors.

Jason Hoskins is a Democrat running for the Michigan House of Representatives for the 18th District. Hoskins grew up as the son of two union members, graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor’s in Political Science and a Master’s in Public Administration, and earned a law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy. He has served as vice president for the Michigan Metro-Detroit Branch of the ACLU and worked as a staff member for a state representative and state senator. Hoskins currently serves as the chair of the Legislative Committee on the Southfield City Council.

Hoskin’s priorities include fighting for a results-driven agenda that includes a fairer tax system, raising the minimum wage, paid sick leave, equitable funding for K-12 schools, and affordable college and skilled trades schools. Hoskins will advocate for holding utility companies accountable, enacting common sense gun violence prevention measures, fighting voter suppression efforts, and supporting immediate solutions that address climate change. He will also fight to end the school to prison pipeline, eliminating bail systems that prey on the poorest citizens, ensuring LGBTQ citizens are equally protected under the law, protecting abortion access, and improving Michigan’s healthcare system by making prescription drugs more affordable, expanding mental health care, and addressing the rise in substance abuse.

Samantha Steckloff is an incumbent Democrat seeking re-election for her second term in the Michigan House of Representatives. After high school, while obtaining her degree from Purdue University in political science, Steckloff served as the youngest city youth advisor in the country. Later, she was elected to the Farmington Hills City Council twice, where she promoted sustainable building practices in the city, created the Community Health Commission, and expanded recycling programs.

Steckloff’s priorities include standing up to polluters and corporations to protect our air and water, investing in both traditional schools and trade schools, apprenticeships and other skills training programs, and standing alongside marginalized communities for equality in our state. As a cancer survivor, Steckloff’s priorities also include fighting for a public insurance option that helps Michiganders get the health care coverage they need and protects those with preexisting conditions.

Noah Arbit is a Democrat running for the Michigan House of Representatives for the 20th District. Arbit was born and raised in West Bloomfield. He first began a path of advocating for and pursuing justice for others when he was only 18, testifying against a sexual predator who had assaulted Arbit and others. Arbit has since served on Governor Whitmer’s staff in Oakland County and founded the Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus. He currently serves as the director of communications for the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.

Arbit’s priorities, if elected to office, are expansive and detailed. He will fight to protect abortion access, ensure LGBTQ Michiganders are protected equally under the law, implement campaign finance reforms, and protect the right to vote. Arbit will advocate for expanding access to mental health care—especially for underserved communities, making prescription drugs affordable, holding utility companies accountable, and sustainably increasing public school funding. He will also fight to make Michigan a national leader in combating hate crimes.

Robin McGregor is a Democrat running for the Michigan House of Representatives for the 52nd District. McGregor has been a utility worker for more than three decades, has a history of community activism with schools and local youth, and is running for office to strengthen and take care of her community.

McGregor’s priorities include fighting so every Michigander has equal rights under the law, pushing to ensure children and teachers have more opportunities in education, and working to revitalize our infrastructure not just to fix roads and bridges but to improve green spaces. She wants to improve access to high-speed internet, and work to ensure everyone has clean air and safe water. She supports reproductive freedom, labor rights, and ensuring access to affordable health care.

Brenda Carter is an incumbent Democrat running for her third term to the Michigan House of Representatives. Carter has an extensive history of public work that includes serving on many boards, including the Pontiac School District Board of Education, Michigan Association of School Board of Directors, and the Council of Urban Boards of Education. She’s the recipient of awards including the Michigan Chronicle’s Woman of Excellence in 2015. She also co-founded the now-historic Million Woman March.

Carter’s priorities after re-election include securing funding for local roads, increasing the minimum wage, promoting equitable funding for all school districts and also promoting skilled trades. She is also fighting for government transparency and stricter lobbying rules, air and water quality, reproductive rights, and supporting union protected jobs.

Shadia Martini is a Democrat running for the Michigan House of Representatives for the 54th District. Martini immigrated to the United States in 1992 after receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Aleppo. She received her Master's of Business Administration from the University of Michigan in 1996 and now owns and operates several businesses in southeast Michigan. Martini is a human rights activist and volunteer aiding Syrian refugees for over a decade.

Martini’s priorities include working to increase the competitiveness of Michigan’s economy, pass common sense gun violence prevention legislation, and updating Michigan’s roads and bridges. She believes abortion is a human right and that prescriptions and health care should be affordable. Martini will also fight for cleaner air and water and work to protect the right to vote.

Sharon MacDonell is a Democrat running for the Michigan House of Representatives for the 56th District. MacDonell received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan and has since worked in a variety of jobs, including as a journalist. She is currently the marketing and video manager at Lawrence Technological University and a community activist.

MacDonell’s priorities include providing appropriate funding to public schools and not allowing public funds to be used for voucher schemes. She will fight to protect access to abortion, lower prescription drug prices, and increase mental health support for veterans and military families. MacDonell will also work to protect voting rights and the environment.

Brendan Johnson is a Democrat running for his first term on the Oakland County Commission. Johnson has worked as a legislative staffer for Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin and State Representative Samantha Steckloff. Johnson’s priorities include 21st century workforce training, increasing access to health care, and public transportation.

Thomas J. Kurzyniec is a Democrat running for his first term on the Oakland County Commission. We could find little information about this candidate.

Kurzyniec is running against Republican incumbent Karen Joliat, who has conservative credentials.

Given the limited information we have about both candidates, we are unable to determine whether either candidate could be considered progressive to any degree, but at this time we are recommending voters consider Kurzyniec over Joliat based on the information we were able to find.

Angela Powell is a Democrat running for her third term on the Oakland County Commission. She has been an active volunteer in Pontiac since long before she was elected in 2018. She has worked as a community organizer for both the Oakland County Democratic Party and the Michigan House Democratic Caucus. She also worked on the staff of former House Democratic Leader Tim Greimel. Transportation, education, and voting rights are among Powell’s priorities on the County Commission.

Janet Jackson is a Democrat running for her eighth term on the Oakland County Commission. She currently serves as vice chair of the Democratic Caucus on the County Commission. She currently works in administration for AT&T and previously worked as a substitute teacher and real estate agent. She is a member of Communications Workers of America Local 4009 and an active community volunteer.

Jackson is running against Republican Kat Phillips.

Janet Jackson is the best choice in this race.

Irma Clark-Coleman is a Democrat running for her seventh term on the Wayne County Commission. She chairs the Committee on Public Safety, Judiciary and Homeland Security for the County Commission. She served 12 years in the Michigan Legislature, where she developed a progressive reputation and voting record. A longtime Wayne County Road Commission employee, she also served on the Detroit Public Schools Board of Education.

She is endorsed by the Michigan AFL-CIO.

Clark-Coleman is running unopposed and is the most progressive choice in this race.

Monique Baker McCormick is a Democrat running for her third term on the Wayne County Commission. She is an Army veteran and real estate broker who has a MBA degree. Workers’ rights, neighborhood economic development, education, and the environment are among her priorities. Thanks in part to her efforts, the City of Detroit is making voting easier by adding several new ballot drop boxes throughout the city. She has also been a strong advocate for civic engagement among youth and through anti-littering campaigns.

She is endorsed by the Michigan AFL-CIO.
