Elect John Hamasaki for District Attorney to put San Francisco back on the right track for progress.
John Hamasaki’s experience and policy positions demonstrate that he will be a progressive voice for the constituents of San Francisco County and will govern effectively in the best interest of this diverse district.
Progressive endorsements: Hamasaki has the endorsement of some progressive groups, including San Francisco Rising Action, San Francisco Democratic Party, Harvey Milk Democratic Club, San Francisco Berniecrats, and San Francisco Green Party. He has also received the endorsement of some local leaders, including San Francisco Supervisor Dean Preston, former San Francisco Supervisor Sandra Lee Fewer, and former California Assemblymember Tom Ammiano.
Electoral History: Hamasaki has not run for public office before.
Top issues: Dismantling drug organizations, reduce property crime, police accountability, establishing reentry support programs, expand victim services, reduce public corruption, prevent wage and corporate theft
Governance and Community Leadership Experience: Hamasaki is a criminal defense attorney in private practice, which he does to bring representation to individuals facing prosecution. His legal practice has focused on several areas, including homicide, financial crime, and narcotics. Hamasaki is a former San Francisco police commissioner, and focused his leadership on improving the cultural competence, language access, and domestic-violence issues plaguing the police department. During his campaign, he has been critical of mass incarceration, and has proposed a reinstatement of the Independent Investigations Bureau to fully hold law enforcement accountable for misconduct. As DA, Hamasaki would seek to reduce drug and property crime through increased prosecution, but would also look to establish reentry programs and addiction-treatment programs to support individuals involved in the criminal-justice system. Hamasaki has taken a combative approach to political discourse, and has frequently made controversial posts and argued openly with members of the Board of Supervisors on Twitter.
Early in his career, Hamasaki served as a law clerk for the California Department of Justice, and as a trial attorney for the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office. After experiencing discrimination as an Asian person, he moved to San Francisco as a young adult to find a larger Asian community. He is a longtime supporter of victim services and hate-crime prosecution, and has been vocal about the importance of police accountability.
Other background: Hamasaki, an attorney, grew up in Florida and has lived in San Francisco all of his adult life.
The Race
Primary election results: The June 2022 election included a measure to recall former San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, which passed with 55% of the vote. Candidate fundraising and pledges: John Hamasaki’s campaign has not filed any fundraising receipts with the county.
Opposing candidate: Interim DA Brooke Jenkins
Opposing candidate fundraising and pledges: Interim DA Brooke Jenkins’s campaign has not filed any fundraising receipts with the county.
Interim DA Jenkins was appointed to serve as the interim district attorney by San Francisco Mayor London Breed after the successful recall of former DA Chesa Boudin in June 2022. Both Mayor Breed and Interim DA Jenkins worked in support of the recall, which was primarily funded by Republican donors, and DA Jenkins was also a paid contractor of three nonprofit organizations with connections to the recall effort and the main recall funder.
Interim DA Jenkins has focused her first months in the District Attorney role on restructuring the office and returning to policies focused on punishment instead of restoration. In the first weeks of her appointed term, she fired more than 15 office leaders and reopened plea deals. DA Jenkins also created new divisions, including one focused on crimes against elders and one focused on attempted murder charges. In contrast to former DA Boudin’s progressive approach, she has reimposed stricter sentencing standards for drug dealers, and has permitted adult sentencing for 16- and 17-year-old defendants who are accused of violent crimes. Interim DA Jenkins has also established a five-step process for misdemeanor drug crimes, by which an individual would be cited on the first four occasions and then charged on the fifth occurrence by the Community Justice Center, which can provide access to drug-treatment programs. She also has a close working relationship with Mayor London Breed, leading to the perception that her decisions as district attorney may be inappropriately influenced by the mayor’s office.
