Reelect State Senate Representative Anna Caballero to keep SD-14 on the right track for progress.
Rep. Caballero has a problematic track record and policy positions. However, the threat of a Republican winning this seat outweighs Caballero’s opposition to the majority of progressive bills. We recommend that voters reelect Anna Caballero for AD-14 and hold her accountable to better represent this district.
Progressive endorsements: Senator Anna Caballero has the endorsement of few progressive groups. She is endorsed by state and local leaders, including Dolores Huerta, Assemblymember Joaquin Arambula, and Fresno City Council member Esmeralda Soria.
Top issues: Small business, and tenant rights.
Priority bills: This year, Sen. Caballero’s priorities for SD-14 have included three bills about small-business COVID-19 relief and extending the eviction moratorium. Of these, one has successfully been passed by the state Senate. She has sponsored and passed legislation to address tax parity and the digital divide. Sen. Caballero has not supported her low-income constituents against fossil fuel polluters (AB 378), when she casted a no vote to help kill AB 423, thereby exposing thousands to exploitative landlord practices, and voted against AB 424, which would have restricted guns from California schools. She has taken money from pharmaceutical companies and the Parent Teacher Alliance, which works to undermine public schools by advocating for charters. She scores a CS of 64 out of 100 on Courage Score, our annual analysis of legislators’ progressive voting records. Based on our Courage Score analysis, Sen. Caballero has supported few progressive bills that made it to a vote.
Committee leadership/membership: Sen. Caballero currently sits on seven committees and is vice chair of the Fairs, Allocation, and Classification Committee.
Governance and community leadership experience: Sen. Caballero was elected to the California State Assembly in 2006 and served until 2010, when she decided not to run for reelection and lost her race for state Senate. Caballero returned to the Assembly from 2016–2018, then won her election for state Senate in 2018 by 8 points.
Prior to her election to the state legislature, Sen. Caballero was mayor of Salinas, and city councilmember for fifteen years. Sen. Caballero has been a longtime supporter of farmworkers. At the same time, she has abstained from important votes on holding oil and gas companies to account and has voted against measures that would increase state government accountability.
