  • Rep. Rick Larsen is a moderate, pragmatic Democrat who has been a strong advocate for jobs, transportation, and infrastructure projects in the 2nd District since he was first elected to Congress in 2000. He has also led efforts to protect voting rights, fought to reform student loans, and has been a champion of Wall Street reform. Unfortunately, Larsen angered many progressives with his support of the new contract that eliminated hard-earned pension benefits for Boeing machinists. Before serving in Congress he served on the Snohomish County Council and worked on economic development for City of Everett.

Larsen is facing two opponents who have far less resources in the primary. BJ Guillot is running on an extremely conservative Tea Party platform. Independent Mike Lapointe is running against Larsen on a very progressive platform that includes raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour immediately. Larsen’s experience, broad support, and generally progressive track record make him a good choice in this race.

  • Former Whatcom County Council member and local attorney Seth Fleetwood has earned praise for working together to build support from both sides of the aisle. As a council member, Fleetwood led successful efforts to protect Lake Whatcom and advocated for affordable housing. He also served two terms on the Bellingham City Council.

His opponent, Republican Senator Doug Ericksen, has become infamous for accepting more free lunches from lobbyists (mainly the oil industry) than any other elected official in the state. Ericksen is an extremely conservative Republican who has consistently worked to protect loopholes for the oil industry and other powerful interests while voting to cut funding for education. Ericksen has also been the biggest roadblock to passing the Oil Transportation Safety Act and the bipartisan Toxic Free Kids and Families Act to reduce toxic carcinogens in baby pads and couches. He does not support access to safe and legal abortion. Fleetwood is the clear vote in this race.

  • Satpal Sidhu is a businessman and entrepreneur who has called Whatcom County home for almost 30 years. He is running for the seat Republican Representative Jason Overstreet vacated because Sidhu wants to create jobs, increase access to education, strengthen farm exports, and ensure access to mental health care. His challengers include the former vice chair of the state Republican Party, Luanne Van Werven, who ran against Susan Hutchison for chair by claiming the state Republican Party and former gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna were "too moderate." The other challenger is Bill Knutzen, a pro- coal former Whatcom County Council member who accepted thousands of dollars from Big Polluters in his race for Whatcom County Council in 2013. Libertarian Nicholas Kunkel, also in this race, is not running a serious campaign. Sidhu is the best choice in this race.
